renae_rude posted the following history lesson.
On November 9th, 1869 an special act passed in the territory of Wyoming:
"An Act to Grant the Women of the Wyoming Territory the Right of Suffrage and to Hold Office"
(This is long before the passage of the 19th amendment folks.)
When Wyoming became a state, some other states objected to Wyoming women having the vote. They threatened to refuse statehood to the territory because of it.
A group of women in Wyoming were concerned. They sent a telegram to the Wyoming representative in the nation's capitol:
DROP US IF YOU MUST STOP WE CAN TRUST THE MEN OF WYOMING TO ENFRANCHISE US AFTER OUR TERRITORY BECOMES A STATE STOP
But, the men of Wyoming disagreed and sent the following:
WE MAY STAY OUT OF THE UNION A HUNDRED YEARS BUT WE WILL COME IN WITH OUR WOMEN STOP
Every time I read that, I get teary.
