You don't have to, or anything.

[How do you even hug someone who isn't family or Butler?]

[Alex is angry at himself once again, for being stupid.]

I would think the stress of working with the government got to you, if I may point out.
Your skills are wasted there, anyway.

So where do you think I should work then?

[He knows this is called banter, and he engages it enough with those he's come to know as friends - and yet old reflexes die hard.
Artemis makes a try for tolerance, anyway.]
It would be so much better for you if you chose to work for us instead. We pay better, and we're more competent, Mr. Rider. You wouldn't even have to chase after me for past perceived offenses; the MI6 likes to hold grudges for a very long time.

He simply sighed, trying not to look as mentally exhausted as he was feeling.]
Let's say I did decide to work with you...what would I be doing?
[His stint with SCORPIA - however brief it was, has tempered Alex a little bit.]

Helping us save the world. Not any different from what you already do, I'm sure, but with better... [Does he say what he thinks without the coating, or does he choose to be polite?] manners.
To a degree. It's only an offer, Mr. Rider, far be it from me to force you into anything, we're over that kind of business now.
Or will you have a problem with the background my family carries?

[He mutters it, obviously disliking this whole 'Mister' business. Other than that, he was quiet for a moment, with a look on his face that clearly said that he was weighing his options, analyzing all the sides. He wasn't as smart as Artemis was, but he knew he was smart enough. And daring, which sometimes made all the difference.
Alex sighs, pushing hands into unruly blonde curls, knowing that he was probably going to get sucked into something else.]
Look, thank you for the offer but...I just want to go back to school. Maybe finish a term without being hospitalized. That would be nice.
[MI6 - and Artemis, if he's smart - knows that he'll be back, because this sort of thing was in Alex's blood, and normal life would no longer satisfy his need for adrenalin.]

[Can you hear the disdain in his voice? Yes. He doesn't like being told things he's already known ten times over, especially when the academics of the lessons are profoundly basic and wrong and riddled with holes so wide you could build a satellite in the cavern of it.
Artemis folds his arms over his chest, his mouth drawn into a thin line.]
School isn't nice, it's plain and boring. Why would you waste your time with that?
Reply
Because that's where normal kids go. The ones without MI6 hounding them all the time. I'm missing more classes then I attend at this rate.

So get a tutor? They're not so expensive.
-Or is that a concern for you? I can help, if you need it. [Just to have something to piss the MI6 people with. Look, bonding with your underage agent, Mr. Blunt!]
Reply
You know it's not that. You probably have a file on me somewhere on your hard drive.
[Shrewd as ever, Alex gives the grin of someone who knows he's right. But he also knows that this curiosity would eventually get the better of him. He sighs, shakes his head in disbelief as if he can't even believe that he's doing this.]
Alright, fine. But you'd better move fast, you know. I bet MI6 already know you're in the country. They're probably tracking you right now, you being a threat to national security and all.

[And with the grin of a boy who's been handed a license to do what he wants Artemis tips his head and holds out his hand. They can have all the issues with authority figures together, in between homework and saving the world. And maybe horses.]
Oh, I know. They're listening in right now, actually, but either way - it's a pleasure to have you on board, Mr. Rider.
