Daryl had jumped at the chance to go to the mines with her. He knew with winter there, people would start to get sick and they would need the medicine. The last thing he wanted was for them to have to deal with the entire district dying off. What he wasn't expecting was they place to be overran by walkers. While it was cold out, it didn't seem cold enough to cause them to slow like he'd seen the winter before.
There was a lot of disappointment when the bags were found empty. They would have to come back with more supplies and better weapons, and perhaps a few other people. But when the snow started, he let out a long sigh.
They were at a disadvantage now since they wouldn't be able to see the walkers, but the walkers would be able to smell them. So he gladly stayed there, standing in the corner as Katniss wrapped the blanket around her shoulders. And when she offers him some, he nods and places his crossbow on the groun before sitting beside her.
"Thanks," he says. There's a moment of hesitation before he slips an arm around her body, and pulls her closer.
No one wants the District to fade off, but unfortunately, while most Districts firmly believed in immunizations and taking good care of their sick, 12 had not been so lucky. Only those with money were immunized, Katniss as well before she'd gone to the Capitol, and only her mother was the closest thing to a doctor within the fence. If sickness broke out, many would die without the morphling to help.
She feels slightly helpless, not having found what they'd been searching for. Heavy snowfall outside the mine means the walk back may have them sinking, and the District would be thoroughly worried about the both of them. With a sigh, she intends to settle her head on his shoulder, but then his arm is around her waist, and she's pulled closer.
A nervous sort of laugh erupts from her. Although keeping warm like this would be normal in these circumstances, and she had been forced like this with her family many times, with Daryl, it feels strange. No matter. Warmth is warmth. So she clears her throat, slipping her arm around his middle, and curls close.
"Er... Next time, we should bring more camping equipment," she says quietly.
