All the planning prior to the day of had gone remarkably smoothly. Too smoothly, it seemed, because that meant that the vast majority of the disasters were most likely (and most unfortunately) going to happen on the day itself.

Like the fact that a tentative-looking younger Diamond has to come and inform him just before the ceremony is about to start that, "Lord Santeri, Lady Rachel's father is here."

Of course, this being the Deck, that statement doesn't mean something as simple as "the father of your bride-to-be has arrived and would like to offer his good wishes. It means something more along the lines of "the estranged father of your bride-to-be has crashed the wedding and is in his inebriated state currently trying to ruin yet another aspect of his daughter's life."

And judging by the steadily raising voices that can just barely be heard, an intervention may be in order.

At least there's only one in-law to deal with. There might be flames if either of his parents were still alive.

This was going to be so simple. People they knew, people who would behave, all watching as she walked down the aisle. He'd be up there at the altar, fighting to keep his jaw from being dropped at the sight of her.

Damn it all.

Caleb's shoulder will be caught mid-word, gripped firmly but not yet painfully. Santeri's voice is polite to the extreme. "I think you need some fresh air, sir. Perhaps you'd care to step this way." He's not being hauled. He has one chance to go quietly.

Rachel's there, of course; she's never been one to let others fight her battles, and this war with her father is one that stretches back far longer than either will probably ever admit. Although Caleb, clearly, isn't one to care about bringing up old wounds.

"--making a foolish mistake and you know it. You think you won't lose it completely if he dies? Oh, you're wrong. You're so, so wrong. Standing there thinking you're such a perfect Diamond but you can't even ignore the fact that you feel just as deeply as I did. As your mother did-- and you know what's gonna happen--?" There's the briefest halt in his tirade, not only because Santeri's comes to grip his shoulder, but also because he's stopping to take another swig from his flask. He'll finish his sentence to his daughter before responding to the words of her future husband, "--You're gonna end up like me, kiddo. Washed up and alone and wondering how you could ever've been so blind to how stupid you are ( ... )

...the hell is rolling. ...the hell is his oldmanaccount even named. :| piquedbutler December 15 2012, 01:58:52 UTC
There are days when he wakes up and doesn't even remember having ever woken up beside anyone else. Really, knowing such a time ever Existed doesn't make it relevant. He's been waking up completely content next to Suzanne for ages now--since before the wedding, even, since before 'I love you' and before giving up other women and men. Why bother remembering anything else?

So just like every other day, he'll press a soft kiss to her shoulder in the pre-dawn hours, murmur something soft and incomprehensible and completely Devoted against her skin.

She sighs softly, moving a little against him before turning in his arms, wrapping herself around him. She's not entirely wake yet, but she can still nuzzle against him softly.

The tsk is soft, delivered against her temple with the faintest curl of a smile as he pulls her briefly closer. "I've to work, Suzanne..."
