And while she had been trying to tell herself not to rush this, not to just seduce Pepper from the start and go straight into bed. But she couldn't deny that she really did want to find out what could follow the kissing. Just what it would be like to be locked into an embrace and she still wanted to get under the Gucci. The warmth she felt radiating from his body was inviting and his lap looked like it would be nice to straddle but she stayed where she was.
She tilted her head, her eyebrows going up a little to see if he'd take advantage of the offer. She swallowed as his hand touched her arm and kissed him back hungrily as their tongues teased at each other. She let a quiet moan get swallowed by his mouth and let a hand lift up to rest on his shoulder.
And then came that question and Natasha was brought back to reality with a slightly surprised laugh. She couldn't even remember the last man that actually wanted to take her out to dinner before he took her to bed. Her hand left his shoulder to brush over his red hair and down the side of his face before she pressed a chaste kiss to his lips and tried to get her own urges under control. "I'd love to, Pepper. It'll be refreshing to be wined and dined."

"Good." His eyes were still on her lips. They were there. He wanted to just lean in and find them again. He wanted to press in close once more. His hand on her shoulder moved to snake around to press into her lower back. He really wanted to slip that hand under her blouse, but he knew that wouldn't be appropriate after declaring he wanted to take her to dinner. He wanted to take her to dinner, but he also wanted to take her to a guest bedroom to be alone. "We should move from the kitchen before I take back what I said."
All he could do was smile. He moved to stand up finally from the couch. He needed to get his hands off her and his composure back. Years of working for Tony Stark and he had never been knocked off kilter quite like this. He flexed his fingers before he side stepped towards the kitchen. "I believe the kitchen table would be a better place to talk." Farther away and he'd have to reach just to touch her thigh or upper arm.
He hadn't quite moved into the kitchen yet. He was still staring at her. It was blatantly obvious what his eyes were saying, but he wasn't going to be that man.

She sighed quietly and pressed her nose into his cheek for a moment in a brief nuzzle as she took another moment to gather herself before those stray urges and growing hunger were tucked away to be called on when it was the right time. "I don't want to be something you regret. We should definitely move."
Natasha smiled back at him and sat back on her leg to start to put distance between them even before he stood up. She ran her fingers through her red curls and her smile took on a slight tinge of amusement when she considered that they were both redheads. It wasn't as if she'd forgotten, but it suddenly struck her as she looked up at him. "Right, talk. Yes. I'm sure the table will work nicely."
She picked up her wine glass and took a sip. When she got to her feet the glass was placed back down and Natasha moved in close to Pepper. Her hand found his cheek again and she cupped his face before she stretched up to kiss the corner of his mouth. "Thank you."

It struck him that she assumed he would regret doing anything with her at this juncture. It wouldn't be regret. Not like that. It was more of he expected more of himself. He expected not to fall victim to these urges. He had been so good at holding them back all these years. Right now he didn't want to hold them back and that's what was so weird to Pepper. He didn't know how to fight this battle so distance was the only option that actually made sense to him.
She came closer and his shoulder muscles relaxed. He sighed heavily and pulled back to smile at her. "You know I would never regret us doing--that. I could never." It wasn't how he was. "I just don't want you to think that I intended for us to jump straight to the bedroom. I have thought about it, but that's fantasy. Real life has some rules." He was talking a lot, but only because he was looking down at her lips and not up at her eyes.
"You really shouldn't thank me. You wouldn't thank me if you were inside my head right now." He winced and shut his eyes for a moment. "That was--inappropriate."

She wouldn't have seen being with him now as a regret either. Maybe she would have questioned whether or not she'd pushed her luck, but she assumed that they would find a way to keep going after falling into bed. She also didn't want him to feel like he couldn't be himself. That she was pushing him into anything.
Natasha's lip curled up as she arched an eyebrow. "And you think I did plan this? Never. I just knew I wanted to see you because I liked you. Sometimes though the chemistry can take you by surprise and there's nothing wrong with that. I would never accuse you of ulterior motives. You're not that kind of man." Natasha smiled broadly again and her gaze flicked over his face curiously. "You've had fantasies about me?"
She gave a shake of her head. "No, no. It's not inappropriate. What's inappropriate is how much I want to put my hand on your ass right now. You're entitled to your thoughts, I won't stop you. Just like I'm entitled to mine. I can still thank you."

Pepper sighed heavily when she asked about the fantasies. He was usually more calculated than this. His words were more chosen and less blurty. He got this way when people got close enough though. It happened when a woman got under his skin and worked past the outer professionalism. She had definitely done that and now he was flailing horribly. It was just the biggest train wreck inside his head that one could imagine. He was saying things he never intended for her to hear, but it was too late now. "I do. Vivid. They were a bit more frequent back when you were still with us. They slowed down once you left." Honesty. He was a big fan of that no matter how embarrassing to himself.
His eyebrows shot up when she announced that she wanted to touch his ass. The embarrassed look faded and a small smile appeared. "That can be arranged a little later if you want. Though you've never struck me as the type that needs permission to do much." He liked that about her. She had taken initiative when they interviewed her. She was probably not supposed to demolish Happy that day. Keeping her cover and all, but she had.
"You do look very beautiful. I don't believe I've met or seen anyone quite like you." A redhead lusting after another redhead almost seemed cliched, but it was just how he felt.

And she couldn't deny that she really did appreciate his honesty. "It was clearly my mistake to stay away for this long. I should have come sooner to revive those fantasies. Though you're not alone. I had a few of my own." She batted her lashes and dipped her gaze briefly as she bit back a smile. It was the truth. There'd been a few times over the months since they met where she found herself thinking of Pepper in far from friendly ways.
"I'd like that very much. Perhaps I don't usually seek permission, but I think I should with you. You want to respect boundaries so why shouldn't I do the same?" That first interview had certainly gained their attention even if she had revealed a little too much in the ring with Happy. But she couldn't stand being lectured on fighting when she was more than proficient.
"Now that was smooth." She touched her hand to his before slipping past him so that they could make their way into the kitchen finally. If she got another compliment like that, he wasn't going to be the one in danger of jumping the gun.

"Alright. Fair enough." His intention was never to make her have to live by the way he tried to do things. He liked that she took matters into her own hands. Pepper could be hesitant, but that was just how he was raised. It was his personality that tended to get in the way. He didn't want her to change just because he fluttered off to the kitchen talking about space and waiting. He was happy that she respected him though. That was the good part, but he never wanted her to feel constricted by his silliness.
Pepper dropped his head and smiled when she commented on what he had said. "Was it? It felt cheesy." He turned to watch her make her way into the kitchen. Her hair swept back and forth and he caught glimpses of the back of her neck. Soon enough. Soon enough. He couldn't let himself lose control too much. He had to stay focused. Talking. Adult things.
He finally turned completely and followed her into the kitchen. He made his way to leaned forward on the island. He felt better over here. Less inclined to reach out and pop open the blouse. He was more in control with distance. "It's just the truth though. Not just pretty either. You're incredibly capable. Do you actually speak Latin?"

She certainly didn't feel constricted but she was trying to respect his boundaries just like he was trying to be respectful to her. She smiled up at him once more. She could be patient. She could wait. She could do this the right way for the first time in a long time. Natasha Romanoff going on a date. Stranger things had happened in recent times.
"Not at all. It was a very welcome compliment. It would have been cheesy if you didn't mean it, but I don't think you feel the need to placate me with falsities. We both know we want to get into bed, there's no need to play that card right now." She glanced at him from over her shoulder, her gaze telling him of all the good things that they could do when he was ready.
She had made herself comfortable on a stool and rest her arm on the island as she watched him. "Yes, I do. Not a very prevalent language these days, but one I learned regardless. How did you come to work for Tony Stark?"

Pepper looked up from the counter quickly. "I hope you don't think I said those things just to make sure you'd go to bed with me. That's not the case. I mean them. More than you could ever realize." He didn't want her to think that he was just laying it on thick to get her to sleep with him when the time came. That was her choice. If she wanted to hold off after spending some time together then that was fine. He could handle that. He didn't want her thinking his compliments were coming from a shallow place.
His tizzy was cut short by that look. It had him gripping the side of the island counter just a tad too tight. She really could kill most of his thought processes with just a look. He was kind of impressed by that. Though it was the looked coupled with the kiss and what they had spoke of before. They all kind of mingled together to torture Pepper.
"That's amazing. I've never learned a dead language. It's hard enough keeping up with the mutated English language that Tony speaks." The man could sometimes talk a mile a minute, but Pepper always kept up. "I found an finance error actually. I approached Tony immediately, but his bodyguards were in my way. I was trying to resolve things diplomatically so I pepper sprayed them. He hired me to be his personal assistant after that. I've been watching out for him ever since."

Natasha smiled reassuringly. "I know, Pepper. I know you wouldn't say it just to get me into bed. I wasn't accusing you. I wouldn't be here if that was what I thought. I'm staying because I know you mean them, and I know you're genuine."
Her smile remained as she took in the minute changes. The way he was suddenly quiet and looking both terrified and aroused. Natasha tucked her foot up under her ass so that she could get a little height and reached over to touch his hand. "Breathe."
She smirked just a little. "It's only dead to those of us in mainstream society. The academics it's not. To the artefacts we dig up in the name of science, or SHIELD it isn't either. Even I can have trouble with Stark, so I can only imagine how you cope." Her eyebrow kicked up just a little and she found herself grinning, impressed. "That definitely would have left an impression. I'm glad you didn't want to pepper spray me when we first met."
