The irony of it was that the surgery didn't really have anything to do with it. But he hadn't been awake for long enough after surgery to be able to tell. He was still pretty groggy when he woke up and he could feel the pain distantly through the pain medication. There was a bruised scrape on one side of his face where he'd landed after the blast and the surgery had been to remove all the shrapnel. They'd gotten it all, he'd be fine. But they didn't say what he'd lost.

Clint wouldn't have been able to hear them anyway. When he opened his eyes and saw her, she said something but it was just her mouth moving. He scrunched his eyes a little in confusion. "Steph?" His voice didn't have any sound either.

Clint got there as soon as he got the call, making his way through the field hospital to get to her. They hadn't told him how long she'd been gone and it didn't matter. She was here, she was alive, and he expected her to look a lot worse than when he found her. Sure she had a few bruises and stitches, but she still looked like the same woman.

"Steph, baby." He grasped her hand with both of his and leaned in to kiss her. He just couldn't bare to lose her. She wasn't even supposed to be that close to the action but it was impossible to avoid and she was okay. She was okay.

He pulled back when the kiss landed on her cheek, giving her an odd look, but once she started talking, that look disappeared and he swallowed hard. His heart started hammering. They hadn't told him anything about this. Something was wrong.

"Steph. You..okay?" He squeezed her hand, hoping it had just been too fast, maybe she was confused.. He reached out to touch the side of her face. "It's me, sweetheart."
