[ He's lost in thought when he reaches for the fresh loaf of sourdough bread, which is why his fingers brush against hers. He quickly retracts his hand, both to break the contact, and to let her go first. ]

Always get distracted when they bring out warm loaves like this. [ Well. And there are other things on his mind, too, but nothing he needs to tell a complete stranger about. ]

[Gianna gives a little start at the unexpected touch, she'd been concentrating on remembering everything she needs for the week, and hadn't looked when she reached for the bread. She offers the stranger a little smile, and grabs the loaf just as another one is being set beside it.]

They're so good, it's kinda hard not to.

[ He grabs the other loaf they've just set down, testing the softness of it. ]

Got some clam chowder waiting for me at home, this'll be great with it.

[Her loaf gets placed gently in her basket, and she smiles a little wider.]

Clam chowder? Sounds good. I'm going to make a sandwich, I think.

Wish I could say I made it myself, but I don't do much cooking.

[ He scans the deli section. ] What kinda sandwich?

I'm not much of a chef, but I can get around a kitchen.

Not sure what kind of sandwich, just yet. I know some of this bread will end up getting served with pasta later, I like a good sandwich.

Meatball sub, pastrami, Italian hoagie. Can't go wrong. [ Clearly, he has his favorites. ] And if you can cook eggs without burnin' them, you're ahead of me.

Ah, now there's a guy after my own heart. My Nonna's meatballs on a sub? Nothing better. [She grins, laughing quietly.] And I can definitely fix breakfast. Eggs, bacon, the whole nine.

[ He chuckles softly. ] I didn't have a Nonna around, but my mom was a pretty decent cook. 'Course we didn't eat much Italian food in my house, nice Irish family in Dorchester.

So, those meatballs--that's a recipe that got passed down in the family, right? [ He smiles. ]

You know, I don't think I've had much Irish food. But I'm a pretty adventurous eater, I think I'd try most things.

It is, actually. I've known the recipe since Mom let me in the kitchen.

I can't really cook much Irish food, but I know a few places in the neighborhood, if you wanna walk on the wild side.

I'd like to try these meatballs, though.

I don't mind a walk on the wild side. [Her smile turns a bit teasing.]

Think I could be convinced to make some meatballs and share 'em. Could uh, be a date?

[ He purses his lips, in thought, and meets her eyes. Dating is something he hasn't done in far too long. Now that would be a walk on the wild side. ]

I think I could fit that into my schedule, between video golf and trackin' down leads in Southie. When should we do this?

[Gianna can hardly believe she even made such an offer; normally she doesn't notice guys. But so far this guy - jeez, she hadn't even asked his name - seems nice. Worth a try. Better meeting a guy in a grocery store than a bar, she thinks.]

I'm pretty free for the summer, before I go back to school in the fall. Got a part-time job at a clothes store but aside from that... not much going on.

[ He's also made some poorer decisions in regards to meeting women, and he has a good feeling about her. ]
