[Kanji hasn't been at school much of late. Or at all. He also hasn't been seen around town much, outside of the textile store]

[Everyone thought it was weird. Kanji had been doing really well with the mandatory attendance policy, but now he'd just up and vanished. The teachers 'knew it all along', they said, that the good behavior was only temporary before he slipped back into delinquency, but Chie and the others knew better. Something's up.]

[Naturally the textile store was the first place she checked, but he wasn't there. So she poked her head into the various restaurants, figuring he had to eat. ...Nothing.]

[So now she's looking in more obscure places, hoping that she finds him soon because she's been doing a LOT of walking. Why wouldn't he just pick up his cell phone already?! Argh! She calls again as she walks along the Samegawa floodplain.]

RNG hates us, apparently

[Kanji's sat down by the riverbed, staring into the water. He's heard his phone ringing but he can't bring himself to answer it. If he answers it, then he's going to have to put things into words that he would really rather not have to. He's done with phonecalls and random visitors and the Aiya owner checking in on him every five minutes to make sure he hasn't done anything stupid.

However, that he is by the riverbed means Chie can probably hear his phone ring when she tries to contact him]

At least it wasn't 'surprise i'm ur enemy lol'?

[Aha! Is this our chance? Chie lowers the phone from her ear, head turned in the direction of the familiar ringtone. As long as he's not picking up, she can follow it. And sure enough, there he is. She pockets her phone as she approaches, about to cheerfully scold him...until she sees the crestfallen look on his face.]

[Kanji knows he should probably look up and face Chie but somehow he can't bring himself to do so. Really, he'd expected that she would find him eventually - Inaba's not that big - but that hadn't stopped him from hoping that he could avoid facing up to reality for a little longer]

[She sits down next to him. She can't remember a time she's ever seen the big guy like this. It's extremely troubling! She's dying to ask what's going on, but...maybe this is one of those times where she should exercise a little more tact. Yosuke would say, 'You look like someone just died! What's up?' Chie looks around.]

[He finally looks up, as though only just noticing his surroundings at all]

[As he stares back out across the water. He's never been a convincing actor]

[Not really, no. Chie frowns, still looking straight at him.]

Come on. If you don't want to talk about it, just say as much. But you can at least be honest with me, I know you too well to think anything you just said is true.

[He sighs. Should've known she wouldn't let it go so easily]

It's not that I don't wanna talk about it. Well, it is. But not because I don't want you to know.

That's fine. But just be straight with me. I'd have to be an idiot to not realize you're upset.

[Her hand sneaks into his as her other hand cups protectively over his knuckles as she tips into his shoulder.]

Take your time. You can tell me when you're ready. Or IF you're ready.

[He nods, grasping her hand with the one he has free. He trembles a little as he tries to find the words he needs to tell her what happened]

So...I guess you noticed I ain't been at school. I thought if I took over for a bit...but I guess it was too little too late.

[He glances away, trying to contain his emotions. He had to be strong, now more than ever]

[Took over what? The shop? ...Oh she hopes that isn't what she thinks it is, knowing how much he loves his mother. Please don't let it be that!]

...Yeah. I noticed.

[She squeezes his captured hand, rubbing her thumb gently back and forth alongside his. Her throat feels tight just listening.]

[Finally he composes himself just enough to keep talking, though the words tumble out without much thought to whether they're making sense]

Didn't even notice she was sick til she collapsed...least this time I was actually there. I thought she just needed to take it easy and she'd be fine...

[His voice catches at that. He was supposed to be able to look after her and he'd failed]
