In response to my last post, I thought of two things that would somewhat answer my questions:
1) As Jake said (which I also thought of by my own little self ;-), there is common grace in this world. This accounts to any spark of goodness that exists. There is no goodness apart from God.
2) That it is innate to the human being--from the way God made us--to mimic the order that God Himself has instituted. He has created morality, righteousness, law, etc. Because we are made in the image of God, we seek to be like Him, albeit unconsciously often. This is why humans have created their own laws, morality, etc. Much of this is based on the human conscience, the desire for order, the necessity of harmony among humans (everyone has to concede a little to each other to get along), and what Christianity has established in our culture. A raucous and unbound as we would wish to live, these innate qualities will bring us around or twinge our consciences sooner or later. We can't escape the God-mold we were birthed from.
But still...I am surprised and amazed at how generally well-behaved of a world we are. God's grace is truly amazing.
Thanks to all who commented on my last entry. I appreciate all your input! I thought all of what you said was very fitting, especially this line from
Abigail: "Our conscience is one of the clearest evidences of creation; even those who are unsaved are created in the image of God." So true!
