Why is it that we, as human beings, don't wish for things to be perfect? Why do we prefer a little sin mixed in with our righteousness? Why is the "bad boy" image so attractive? Why is there such a thing as "too much of a good thing"? Or something being "too perfect"? Why do we scrape off the frosting on our cake? Why do we hate "little miss perfect"s? Why are people's imperfections so interesting? Why do we want people to fall/crash/fail in sports competitions? Why do we enjoy "reality tv" where we can see people make mistakes and a fool of themselves? Why is it tiresome to try to be good all the time? Why do people buy torn or faded jeans? Why do we get tired of our favorite food if we eat it every day? Why do we put chemicals in our pure water? Why do we laugh when people get injured in movies? Why do guys think scars are cool? Why are people's faults more memorable than their steady goodness? Why do our minds wander when we pray?
Why are we so human?
We are made in the image of God, yet we have not His perfection, nor do we desire it. As humans we are interested in the grotesque, the ungodly, and the flawed. We desire not the perfect things of God because we are more comfortable in our original sin. It is familiar to us. An old friend.
Someday the things of the world will disgust us. Someday we will be surrounded by perfection and not get cloyed. Someday we will be perfect ourselves. Someday we will endlessly sing the praises of Christ and not get bored. Someday we will laugh for the right reasons. Someday we will be happy with perfection alone.
Until then, O Lord, teach me to desire the things You desire. Make me long for perfection. May I be satisfied with nothing less.
