Randomly Inappropriate?

No, you're not. Hell, I know people whom I talk to still who could get these codes, and I'm not asking. It's their code to give to whom they wish, and odds are pretty high any WoW player (current or former) knows more than enough people whom they'd like to spoil to offer codes to without anyone bugging 'em out of the blue!

I think what offended me, and maybe it was unintentional, was the assumption that I would be willing to contact an old friend for a favor FOR A VIRTUAL STRANGER ( ... )

See, your motivation for being annoyed is THE BEST ONE EVER! Because you're thinking of your friend at Blizz and not wanting to impose/abuse of what is likely something delicate and not to be abused while HE wants to try and help as many as he can. So, short version = you rock. =)

Instead of writing back to say no, and possibly drop in some thinly veiled comments on the rudeness of asking, I lied. I told him I'd "check into it", which I have no intention of doing.

That sounds a lot like customer service training. This is because it sounds like something I say on a regular basis.
