Thomas Jefferson warns us about our current representatives.
"We must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt.
We must make our election between economy and liberty or profusion and servitude.
If we run into such debt, as that we must be taxed in our meat and in our drink, in our necessaries and our comforts, in our labors and our amusements ( Read more... )

"If we run into such debt, as that we must be taxed in our meat and in our drink, in our necessaries and our comforts, in our labors and our amusements, for our calling and our creeds... [we will] have no time to think, no means of calling our miss-managers to account
but be glad to obtain subsistence by hiring ourselves to rivet their chains on the necks of our fellow-sufferers...
And this is the tendency of all human governments."

Excellent post - All of it! I am just gonna link to it. Have you considered running for office yourself? =D

No, you aren't wishy-washy enough. You'd lose, but you'd have many fans (and enemies too of course). :/

I cannot even begin to express the degree to which I admire Jefferson. And that's even with taking into account an honest assessment of his flaws and failings.

If I could be like any of the founders, it would be him. With S. Adams possibly taking second place. (Although Washington is even more admirable than both.)

I wish they'd do another one of those HBO mini-series focusing on Jefferson with the same cast as "Adams."

The Francophile thing is hard for me.

I'd like to be and deeply admire Franklin. It seems to me he was the quiet rudder, helping to steer things along while having a good time.

"Wine is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." My kind of guy.

That would be pretty cool indeed.

Yeah, the Francophile thing definitely counts as a mark in the "Flaw" column for me and you both.

I believe, arguably, that without the efforts of Franklin our little experiment in the Republican form of government would have ended before it even began.
