When I lived in Virginia I wasn't allowed to change my driver's ID what so ever. This mean when I applied to a job, I was instantly outed as a transsexual. The moment they looked at my ID, they could see it was a male name, with a male gender marker. It literally was legally impossible for me to modify my identification.
People often fuss about gay people being 'too out'. There's a problem, when you're trans you're often FORCED out. Particular in the workplace.
I am very out here on the net, but at work I tell *NO ONE*. It's no one's damned business. I'm there to work, not discuss politics or gender theory. Anything besides work gets in the way and hurts our performance. The only people that know are my managers and that's because they found out the moment they took my hiring paperwork and photo copy of my various identifications.
I had to move from Virginia to Washington state due to the lack jobs. I would get to the final stages, but soon as we started to do the HR paperwork, they'd change their minds and say something about my 'lifestyle' not suiting me for the position. Keep in mind this includes places like McDonald's and Dominos, places where all you need is the ability to nod and sport a PULSE to get hired. Of the jobs I did get in Virginia, I was ussually fired. Not for being a bad performer, but for causing such unease with religious coworkers. Four or five times I got the same sort of speech.
"Look, you're a really hard worker, but you're just one person and X, Y and Z all act negatively around you. I know it's not your own fault, but I can't fire all three of them, so I'm going to have to let you go."
I've also been evicted from two apartments, due to quirks (transpeople were specifically written out of ADA and the Fair Housing Act by Jesse Helms) I can actually be evicted faster than a drug dealer. Criminals have more rights.
Here's the transcript from the ADA in 1989, where Helms has the same text he inserted into the Fair Housing Act, into the ADA as well.
It's from 135 Cong.Rec. S10765-01
Mr. HELMS. Mr. President, for the record, I wish to ask the distinguished manager a few questions about this bill, the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1989. In the bill, the definition of "individuals with disabilities" includes anyone with a physical or mental impairment limiting one of life's major activities, and anyone regarded as having such an impairment. The report lists many mental and physical disorders and therefore it must have been the intent of S. 933's authors that it be an all-encompassing bill; is that correct? Mr. HARKIN. Well, the Senator's question was, Did we intend for the bill to be all- encompassing? Mr. HELMS. Yes. Mr. HARKIN. Within the definition the Senator just read, that is correct. Mr. HELMS. I thought the Senator would say that, so I will be specific. Does the list of disabilities include pedophiles? Mr. HARKIN. What? Mr. HELMS. P-e-d-o-p-h-i-l-e-s? Mr. HARKIN. I can assure the Senator no. Mr. HELMS. How about schizophrenics? Mr. HARKIN. Schizophrenics, yes. . . . . Mr. HELMS. Homosexuals? Mr. HARKIN. No; absolutely not. Mr. HELMS. The Senator is certain about that? Mr. HARKIN. I am absolutely certain. Mr. HELMS. Transvestites? Mr. HARKIN. Absolutely not. Mr. HELMS. People who are HIV positive or who have active AIDS disease? Mr. HARKIN. Just a moment, I may have misspoken. Let us back up to transvestite. I said no, but I am told by staff that one court at one time held that a transvestite was mentally impaired, and I further understand the Senator from North Carolina added an amendment to the fair housing amendments last year that took care of that, and it was accepted. Mr. HELMS. Where does that leave us with respect to this bill? Mr. HARKIN. I do not know. Just a minute. If the Senator would like to offer an amendment, we will accept it. If can I ask the Senator, if it could be drafted the same way you did last year on the Fair Housing Act.

Mr. HELMS.
Mr. President, for the record, I wish to ask the
distinguished manager a few questions about this bill, the
Americans With Disabilities Act of 1989.
In the bill, the definition of "individuals with
disabilities" includes anyone with a physical or mental
impairment limiting one of life's major activities, and anyone
regarded as having such an impairment.
The report lists many mental and physical disorders and
therefore it must have been the intent of S. 933's authors that
it be an all-encompassing bill; is that correct?
Mr. HARKIN.
Well, the Senator's question was, Did we intend for the
bill to be all- encompassing?
Mr. HELMS.
Yes.
Mr. HARKIN.
Within the definition the Senator just read, that is
correct.
Mr. HELMS.
I thought the Senator would say that, so I will be
specific. Does the list of disabilities include pedophiles?
Mr. HARKIN.
What?
Mr. HELMS.
P-e-d-o-p-h-i-l-e-s?
Mr. HARKIN.
I can assure the Senator no.
Mr. HELMS.
How about schizophrenics?
Mr. HARKIN.
Schizophrenics, yes.
. . . .
Mr. HELMS.
Homosexuals?
Mr. HARKIN.
No; absolutely not.
Mr. HELMS.
The Senator is certain about that?
Mr. HARKIN.
I am absolutely certain.
Mr. HELMS.
Transvestites?
Mr. HARKIN.
Absolutely not.
Mr. HELMS.
People who are HIV positive or who have active AIDS disease?
Mr. HARKIN.
Just a moment, I may have misspoken.
Let us back up to transvestite. I said no, but I am told
by staff that one court at one time held that a transvestite was
mentally impaired, and I further understand the Senator from
North Carolina added an amendment to the fair housing amendments
last year that took care of that, and it was accepted.
