Fair enough, I'll admit I mispoke. My reference to "gang raping rights & social safety nets" was more with regard to far far far far far far far worst things happening here getting no social response whatso ever (the Bankrupcy Bill that decimates the rights of small buisness, Government Surveillance etc.) I was trying to make a clever comparison to the extreme reaction of the French people to a not-so-offensive piece of legislation to the total absense of reaction to horrifying legislation and illegial executive actions by the American people, and it came off the tracks.
I will however criticize the French government officials for having authored and pushed the legislation without talking to unions at all. They shut the Unions totally out of the negotiations and then proceded to act surprised at the extremity of the response. Had they been willing to work with the Unions they might have come out with a fairly similar piece of legislation without anyone's political career being put on the line & with a much higher chance of it being passed.
Oh I hadn't heard of the bankrupcy bill send me a link to that. Also, the whole joke wasn't so much about what the French are rioting about. It's more a comment on the fact that they love to riot. It's the national pastime.
