The media confuses me. Does nothing interesting happen these days? At work, I have to explain the mercury in tuna issue constantly, as every news network in the world seems to be reporting misinformation on it. And I further have to explain that not only is their information faulty, it's flippin' old. There has been no change in what the FDA has been saying about consumer advice regarding seafood since 2001, yet the media is suddenly worrying it like a dog at a bone. Whipping up fear in people has become more important than actually informing the public. It's quite annoying.
Why am I suddenly thinking of this? 'Cause I was looking at the homepage of Scientific American, and there's a
"Feature Article" linked there about stress. And it was actually even more interesting to me than I initially realized it would be, because it's building on the earlier research Joseph Ledoux described in
The Emotional Brain (which is a fantastic book. I would highly recommend it except for the fact that it's six years old now, so it would probably be more beneficial to read something more current.) Even refers to him.
I was on page three of the article before I realized it was from last September.
Why is a five month old article the feature on the main page of a periodical? Granted, I'm quite interested and expect to read the whole thing, so I'm glad I came across it. But this still makes no sense to me! Have there been no advancements in neuroscience to report since then or something?
*Sheesh!*
Well, at least they clearly indicate at the top of the page when the article is from. Unlike the media, which treats the mercury issue as "Breaking News!" (Had I just bothered to look at the top of the page. But who'da thunk?)
