Favorite Episode(s): Battle Lines, Venomous Creatures, False Confessions, Blame Game, J.R.'s Masterpiece, Ewings Unite!, Guilt & Innocence, Let Me In, A Call to Arms, Love & Family, Guilt by Association, and Legacies
Least Favorite Episode: I don't think I have one truthfully. All of the episodes were really good and important to the season's storylines. I just love some episodes more than others hehe.
Favorite Storyline(s): I had so many storylines that I loved. My ultimate favorite storyline in this season was the growing relationship between John Ross Ewing and Pamela Rebecca Barnes. They went from frenemies with benefits to well in my opinion soulmates. I hate using the word soulmates, but that is exactly what these two are. They both have to endure the legacies and expectations of their fathers, but these two live in a different time. I just loved how slowly these two characters fell in love with one another. John Ross wanted to be there for her, and she wanted to be there for him. They wanted to accomplish the same goals. John Ross and Pamela Rebecca's relationship was such a huge part of the season because it tied into nearly every storyline in some fashion. I don't know how the writers did that, but I truly loved it hehe. The second storyline I enjoyed was everything surrounding J.R.'s Masterpiece, and how it tied into J.R.'s death. The show was sadly in an uncomfortable bind when Larry Hagman passed away. However, I felt the show did the storyline with grace, respect, but also stayed true to J.R. Ewing's character. I truly loved how it united all of the Ewings, Pamela Rebecca Barnes' officially joining the Ewing family, takedown of Ryland and Cliff Barnes, and it also answered the questions of what became of Christopher's mother Pam (which was also done respectfully btw). The third storyline I enjoyed was Pamela Rebecca Barnes' pregnancy. It was so sweet to see the family concerned about her and twin babies. The last storyline that I enjoyed was Ann's backstory and trial. I wasn't expecting to see the trial to take place in all one episode, but I quite enjoyed the fast paced of it.
Least Favorite Storyline(s): Emma's character fills the young troublemaker role, but I just got tired of it after a while. It became a real downer, and I'm not quite sure what the writers us to feel towards Emma and her relationship with Drew. I thought too much screentime was devoted to Emma. I understood why Drew had so much because he was tied to Ryland and the Oil Rig explosion. He served a purpose, and pushed other storylines that I loved forward. Whereas Emma's storylines after Ann's trial just didn't do it for me. It felt like the writers were trying to turn Emma into young Lucy Ewing or Dynasty's Fallon Carrington, but it just didn't work. The reason why young Lucy Ewing worked is because she had more heart than Emma. There is no doubt that Lucy loved her family, but she was lost because her parents weren't around so she would act out. Emma is definitely not Dynasty's Fallon Carrington (S1-S4) because Fallon was quite intelligent in business and wanted to be seen more than her rich father's daughter. Fallon was also fierecly loyal and caring to (certain members lol) of her family. Now I think about it Pamela Rebecca Barnes is far more similar to Fallon Carrington lol. Anyway, the point is Fallon Carrington and Lucy Ewing were three dimensional characters despite being naughty vixens now and then. Don't get me wrong I do have sympathy for her character because she had to grow up in the Ryland household, and believed her mother didn't love her. Emma is royally screwed up, but there isn't much to her. It got to a certain point where I stopped feeling sympathy for her especially when she has no regard to others in Ann's family (which now includes Pamela Rebecca).
Favorite Dramatic Scene: Wow, there is so many that I love truly. However, there are four scenes that I remember the most in the season:
First, in "J.R.'s Masterpiece" the Ewing funeral just left me in tears. It was one of the most personal funerals I have watched, and it was due in large part that the cast was grieving over the loss of powerhouse Larry Hagman. To see these raw emotions from Lucy, Sue Ellen, Bobby, John Ross, and so forth really made it tough. The dialogue and acting were top notch. J.R.'s funeral was one of the most memorial moments of the series. It still makes me sad we will never see J.R./Larry again, but his legacy on the show will live on through Sue Ellen, John Ross, and Bobby. The cast did a terrific job especially Linda Gray, Patrick Duffy, and Josh Henderson
Second, in "Guilt & Innocence" the ending just left me heartbroken, but it was so beautifully directed and acted. There was barely any dialogue except for Pamela's screams when her twins were dying *sniff*. During the course of the season Pamela and Christopher finally made some positive headway to make sure their children both have a mother and father despite their divorce. To work together. Despite J.R's death, Pamela and her babies were truly one of the few joys the Ewing family had left. So when the babies died in the aftermath of the Ewing Oil Rig explosion, so did the hope of so many characters in that moment. The sadness, anguish, and fear from Christopher, John Ross, and Pamela was truly heartbreaking to watch. It's one moment where the fandom didn't have any ship wars because there was just utter sadness to hear Pamela's cries as her children flatlined right in front of her and the helplessness of Christopher and John Ross. The gold acting stars in this episode truly goes to John Henderson, Jesse Metcalfe, and Julia Gonzalo.
Third, in "Let Me In" was seeing poor Pamela grieving over the loss of her children, and John Ross concern over her. This was the episode where my sister and I knew John Ross loved Pamela and wanted to protect her. John Ross is all about double dealing and secret agendas, however; he had to put that aside because of the raw brutal pain Pamela was going through. There is one moment I just loved was when John Ross arrives at her apartment, and sees Pamela rocking back and forth on the terrance. He goes over to her slowly and puts a blanket around her, and listens to her intently of what she has to say. John Ross doesn't make any smartalex comments or anything, but picks her up and takes her inside from the cold. Julia Gonzalo did such a terrific job in these grieving scenes in the episode, and Josh Henderson once again showed the tenderness John Ross has for Pamela.
Lastly, in the "A Call to Arms" Pamela sadly realizes that her own father, Cliff Barnes, was responsible for the oil rig explosion that later killed her unborn children. It's heartbreaking to see because Pamela loves her father, and all she wants is his love, support, and respect. In the end all she received was the death of her children. The blow is so hard that Pamela goes to John Ross' room in the pouring rain in the midst of her emotional and mental exhaustion. It's also a very tender moment between John Ross and Pamela because he picks up so she won't fall and takes care of her for the rest of the night. After the explosion John Ross and Christopher didn't think Cliff would do something like this to his own daughter, but sadly their investigation proved it was Cliff. Pamela's character really goes for a rollercoaster in the entire season. Overtime, Pamela finally sees what her father because a revengeful, bitter, old man that can't let go of the past. J.R. may have started as the villain of the series, but it is Cliff Barnes that is the villain now. It's just heartbreaking to see Pamela hurt so much, but she had to know the truth. Yet, it is so romantic what John Ross does for her.
Favorite Couple(s): Pamela Rebecca Barnes/John Ross Ewing and Bobby Ewing/Ann Ewing
Favorite Comedy Scene: J.R. Ewing instant messaging Bobby Ewing LOL!! Plus anything comedical with Pamela and John Ross. I don't remember that much comedy because it was a pretty heavy season overall (as it should be).
Favorite character(s): Bobby, Ann, Sue Ellen, Ryland, Cliff, Pamela Rebecca, John Ross, and Christopher.
Least favorite character(s): Emma, Elena, and sometimes Drew
Favorite guest star(s): Lee Majors, Judith Light, Joan Van Ark, Steven Weber, Ted Shakleford, Audrey Landers, and Faran Tahir.
Favorite friendship(s): The Ewing Family, Sue Ellen/Ann, J.R./Bum, and the Trio of Christopher/Pamela/John Ross
What did you think of the season in general? I thought overall the season was fantastic!! It was quite heavy, but it left my loved ones and I on pins and needles. It was romantic, intense, heartfelt, at times dark, and yet was able to put a little comedy moments in there. It is hands down one of my favorite seasons from the show. The writers were in a tough spot, but I thought they did the season terrifically. The second half of the season was pure gold. They were able to show respect to not only Larry Hagman, but also the characters of J.R. Ewing and Pamela Barnes. The writing, directing, and acting was totally top notch. I don't know where they are going with Elena and Emma, but I hope it all works out creativity-wise. Other than that I'm really curious on where the show will be heading because there is no way Cliff Barnes, the Governor, and Ryland will go out without a fight. I'm curious to see when Pamela Rebecca finds out that her father was framed for J.R.'s murder, but the flip side of the coin is that Cliff still killed her babies. You can see drama and angst coming in the future for Pamela Rebecca and John Ross, but hey it is not Dallas without love, vengeance, revenge, sneaky business, and drama.
