Lost Series Finale - The End of an Era

May 24, 2010 19:54

I was tempted to watch the series live stream on the computer, but I decided not to since I didn't want to watch the live stream on the computer and I didn't want spoilers since it airs three hours later. It's always sad to see a series go, but it went out and carried itself out with style and grace. All I have to say I'm in the camp that loved series finale! It was so very emotional, simplistic, and stayed true to the characters and show.

So all this time the flashsideways was an afterlife limbo! Man, the answer was right in front of us lol. The scar on Jack's side in AU wasn't from his surgery on the island, but rather from the knife wound. When Juliet said "it worked" wasn't about the Faraday A-Bomb plan, but rather about getting the candy bar loose from the vending machine lol. Desmond actually died for a short bit in "Happily Ever After" for him to see the the afterlife limbo, and etc etc etc.

Glad Jack and Kate stopped the MiB before he got off the island. Taking the actual cork out of the island allowed MiB to become human again to have Jack and Kate to destory his evil reign on the island. That was Kate's island purpose, but her purpose continued on by helping Claire to become the mother she meant to be for Aaron. Loved that Jack did exactly what he set out to do in the beginning, and his death was so sad
. Jack was meant to die in the pilot, and now it feels like all of this was a journey for him to become this man of faith. A person that will save the world literally and helping people around him. Matthew Fox was amazing in this finale btw. Glad he didnt die alone. That Vincent laid next to him as he slowly went into the flashsideways world of the pre-heaven. Plus he was able to see his friends make it in the plane before he died which was another goal Jack accomplished. Sidenote loved that my two favorite fights in this tv season happened during a rainstorm lol. The second fight is of course one of the best Smallville finale when Clark fought Major Zod in the S9 finale (that finale was also nearly perfect and beyond EPIC -- alas that's for another post).

Must say the reunions, wake-up montages, and the Titantic-esque ending were so perfect and quite emotional for me. They all died at different times and places, but they all ended up together in the end
. Loved the all the wake-up flashbacks with Sawyer/Juliet, Shannon/Sayid, and Claire/Charlie. Thought it was a good touch that Kate woke up through her bond with Claire and Aaron. Speaking of Juliet I loved that my friend's speculation that Juliet would be the doctor to see the Kwon's first look at Ji Yeon. When I saw Shannon and Sayid reunite I gushed so much lol. Even though I like Sayid with Nadia I always felt Shannon held a special place because with Shannon that's when Sayid started to see himself anything, but a killer anymore. With Nadia he was constantly reminded of his tortured past. The series is about progression not regression, and that's exactly what I always thought the relationship with Nadia did. Like I said don't get me wrong I love Nadia and her relationship Sayid, however; what Sayid had with Shannon is exactly what the show is about.

Plus a big
at the quad-triangle ending! I was hoping it would be Jack/Kate and Sawyer/Juliet in the end!! To me the show travelled down those paths, and was beautifully led up to. There is no doubt they have chemistry with one another and hold a special place, but for this shipper to me those pairs match each other perfectly. I was quite emotional at their wake-up moments. Heck, the whole Titantic-esque church ending had me in tears of happiness all the while grieving for Jack's death
. Can you cry at the same time for two different reasons? I don't know, but it sure felt like it was lol. Just so utterly proud of Dr. Jack Shepard. Now this is how you write a male lead character!! In any case even the "I Love You" moment on the cliffs was in a different context. You could just feel how different it was. Meaning how meaningful it was coming from Jack and Kate to each other. Just as it was equally powerful when Juliet and Sawyer woke up together to realize they just found each other. Poweful stuff.

Loved that Hugo became the next protector with Ben taking Richard's role (how awesome is that Richard is no longer afraid to die and since Jacob is no more completely he is now aging) and continuing his redemption and also giving him a purpose. A purpose and feeling special he always wanted. I like that Ben didn't go in the church because after all he has done he honestly needed to wait in this afterlife limbo. He has a lot of blood on his hands, but I can imagine he helped Hugo to make the next reign of the island a peaceful and uplifting reign. Plus loved the shout to the Star Trek series with those two at the end lol. While Hugo can give a far more uplifting reign compared to the island's previous protectors. Something that Jacob always wanted because you can see the guilt when Jacob spoke about his mistakes. Mistakes that had blood on his hands, however; those mistakes is what Jacob relateable and to understand these very 'lost' characters. Without a flawed Jacob a part of me believes our beloved characters would have never reached their potential because he is a person who believes in redemption, forgiveness, never giving up, and rebirth. Without those ideals he couldn't have tapped into the awesomeness of the future protectors of Jack and Hugo. I can only imagine the awesomeness Hugo did while he protected the island, and helped people with Ben's help. Color me a very proud fan of Hugo, Ben, and Jack.

Speaking of proud can I just say my faith in Sayid came true in the previous episode
. He redeemed himself by taking the bomb throughout the sub for his friends. When Sayid did this noble act and not killing Desmond I couldn't help, but smile like a chester cat. I'm glad I never completely gave up on him and he got his much deserved happiness with his soulmate Shannon
. Seeing Frank alive was almost a nice surprise because since we didn't see him officially die I was hoping he was alive just like with Richard's character. That both men lived, and Frank's purpose was to get Jack's pals off the island (again lol). I found it was quite touching to see Christian Shepard welcoming his son to the door of Heaven. To be there and hug him like he always wanted to. Just a pure golden moment, and to make sure the last time we see Christian isn't in the guise of the Man In Black.

The parallels between the pilot and the end I was expecting especially with Jack's character. Great touch with the eyelid closing. I'm glad they didn't answer all the questions, and left it up to the viewer. I never recalled all questions being answered in any series whether it was book, movie, or tv show. Plus the journey of the characters continued on, and they are still finding the answers Jack has come to know himself earlier. The island can represent so much from humanity to heaven and hell to the epicenter of creation. While I loved the island mythology on the show to me the show was about the characters, love, redemption, rebirth, and finding oneself. The island and each other helped them find where they belonged and grow. To me that's far more important than the answers because in the end someone's answer is another person's question. Epic ending to an epic tv show. Can't wait to get the dvd
.

Overall, the season was amazing to watch. Allowed viewers to see things we always wondered about, and see the characters act in ways we hoped to see (e.g. Papa Jack and Mama Juliet). The afterlife limbo storyline allowed myself the very much needed closure, and the Titantic-esque ending allowed for me to depart from this series as a happy camper. Are there things I wish were altered in it's final season season? If I really think about it, then I'm sure there is. I was just a very satisfied fan throughout this tv season
. As my Mama used to say if something can make you laugh, cry, and smile, then you know your watching something good
