Well, here we are back from reading week and ready to get to work again. Right? I enjoy the works by Robert Browning, and most particularly “My Last Duchess”, which I studied in high school. It is interesting to note that I learned it a little differently back then. There are a couple of aspects of the poem that are different than what I was taught back then. When I read it in high school I was under the impression that the Duke murdered his “last duchess,” whom he refers to in the painting on the wall. It was implicated that he was so full of jealousy and rage that he either hired someone or got rid of her by himself. I have since learned a slightly different perspective on it though. Perhaps the duchess simply died young and it wasn’t because she cheated on him. There are many different ways to look at the poem. The poem is written in iambic pentameter-which is something that I always enjoy- and there is a considerable amount of punctuation throughout the poem. Perhaps this is a reflection of the speaker (the Duke) and his incomprehensible attitude. Overall this poem is quite good and one that I have enjoyed for many years now.
Elizabeth Barrett Browning is another great poet, whose sonnet 43 is a poem that I’ve always been fond of even though it is a bit too lovey-dovey for me. The words she uses are sweet and I can see someone who is madly in love completely worshipping it. The first line is pretty famous and is one of those lines that you always hear spoken of. I heard the line before I ever read the poem and when that occurs with poetry, the popularity of the poem becomes quite obvious. I think this husband and wife team created some lovely poetry, which I enjoy very much.
