Summary: Nate and Maggie count down to the new year together.
The skies were dark outside, with a cold breeze rippling through the trees, but that was to be expected of winter in Boston. Nathan Ford sat in his living room, his arm curled around his wife of five years. He ran his hand through her soft, blonde hair which caused her to chuckle slightly.
“It’s good we both got time off work for tonight,” said Maggie as she gracefully took a sip from the wine glass she held in her hand. It was a special night, one that would not be repeated in their lifetime.
“Thankfully even insurance investigations can wait for the new year,” Nate replied. “I’m closing in on something in one of the companies that is trying to claim for a explosion in one of its exhibits.” Nate said animatedly, quietening as Maggie put her hand over his.
“Work talk can be saved for later, it’s not every day that we change centuries.” Maggie said, causing Nate to look sheepishly at her.
“Did I tell you, Sam made a friend today at the park.” Maggie said just as Nate took a sip of his wine.
He started coughing slightly before looking happily at Maggie.
“Seriously?” He said. Maggie nodded, a happy smile on her face. It would be a year before Sam could be accepted by a pre-school so making a friend was always exciting for the two parents.
“Her name is Emily Fornell, Sam offered her his stuffed dog when she looked sad after falling over in the sandpit. She then refused to let him out of her sight for the duration of their playtime.” She said, causing Nate to think for a moment.
“He’ll be breaking hearts before he leaves elementary school, he’s a true Ford.” He said smugly before wincing as Maggie hit him in the arm. For one so dainty, she could pack a punch.
“He will do no such thing, he’s also a Collins which means he’ll have tact unlike someone I could mention.” Maggie retaliated.
“James?” Nate said sarcastically, causing Maggie to roll her eyes.
“I was thinking about someone a little closer to home.” She replied as she turned on the television, flicking through the channels before finding the one which held the countdown for the new year.
“Look at that Nate, Britain have made a building, the Millennium Dome.” She said as they saw a clip of the fireworks from Britain which had already taken place.
“Looks like a giant cake,” Nate said simply.
“Does not. Architecturally speaking it’s quite an impressive building,” she said as she tried to defend the large building.
“It does, I mean look at it - the white bit is the icing of the cake and then the twelve yellow candles. I bet that’ll be Sam’s cake in ten years.” He said, causing her to laugh and nod her head.
“For his twelfth birthday I’ll-” she said.
“You mean your brilliant husband will,” Nate said teasingly as he interrupted her.
“We will,” she said, “make a cake just like that.”
“I’ll hold you to that,” Nate said jovially. “I can’t believe it, we’re moving into another century, we’re on the turn of the century.” Maggie settled down into his arms as they stretched out over the sofa.
“And this one will be as good, if not better than the previous one, I’m sure,” she said.
“How will the 21st century beat the 20th century, I found the most wonderful woman in existence and we have Sam.” He said.
“I don’t know, but it will,” she replied just as the countdown began on the television screen.
10 - 9 - 8 - 7 - 6 - 5 - 4 - 3 - 2
“I love you,” Nate whispered.
- 1
“I love you too,” Maggie whispered back.
The fireworks erupted on the television screen, signifying their entering the year 2000. Nate bent down and kissed Maggie lightly on the lips.
“Happy new year,” he said.
“Happy new century,” she replied.
