I hate Crowley. At best, he's my favorite demon in the Supernatural universe, which isn't saying a lot. But I do agree with him on one point: The Winchester brothers are frequently functional morons. Like in the episode "99 Problems."
Okay. So there's an entire town being attacked by demons. This town is aware of the apocalypse and is fighting back against the demons with rock salt, holy water, devil's traps, and Enochian exorcisms. Now, if you've been watching the show up to this point, you may have noticed a very simple fact about demons: They are arrogant as all hell, but they're also cowards. They'll stick around to the end if they think they're going to win (which they usually do), but when they're caught and have no way to win, they'll skip town. So why were they attacking this town? They had apparently been attacking for weeks, maybe months, and been continually beaten back. Why had they not given up?
I don't blame the townspeople for not figuring this out. These were, after all, their first demons, and they were working with information from the Whore of Babylon. But the Winchesters have been fighting demons for years. How did they not notice that the demons should have fled by now?
I've played this scene out (where someone with a brain actually asks why the demons are attacking) several times, and I've come up with a couple potential answers the Whore could give:
1. The demons are after her.
2. The demons are after some valuable text or artifact in the church.
3. The demons are threatened by the town's goodness and the fact that everyone is going to Heaven and want to send them to Hell. (Going by her MO during the episode, this is the one I think she'd go with.)
Assuming the person talking still had a brain, these are the responses to those answers:
1. How did the demons even know where she was? She's a prophet. She's protected by angels. Heck, she could just walk out and meet the demons and you know what would happen? Her angel would come down from Heaven and smite their asses to protect her. Angels take care of their prophets.
2. What's that, then? And why didn't the priest seem to know about it?
3. Ahahaha, no. Dying fighting a demon doesn't send you to Hell. If anything, it gives you holy street cred and diverts you to Heaven. If the demons wanted to send everyone to Hell, they would... well... actually, they'd do exactly what they're doing. Let the Whore of Babylon infiltrate the town and get everyone to sin.
Unfortunately, no one with a brain was actually in the episode, so we spent an entire episode listening to a false prophet who couldn't have answered the most basic question about the situation they were caught up in.
