Five Minute Writings

Feb 12, 2009 14:39

In order to spur creativity in my brain, I've decided to start reading up on writing. I came across a website that has a list of five minute writing exercises. I'm starting off easy for today:

January 2nd's Writing

Write the first paragraph(s) of a story that begins:
She would not give him the last piece of pie.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She would not give him that last piece of pie. It was a difficult decision. Let him eat the pie, feeling her body tense as it realizes it's missing some sort of deliciousness, or eat the pie herself, feeling her bodies relief but her minds torment.  It was not fair. This medium sized piece of pumpkin pie that was oh so popular during Thanksgiving had lasted longer than its mates. In the end, it was the last man standing. A perfect isosceles triangle of goodness. Just enough crust and a cool to the touch filling that just smelled like Thanksgiving.
It was an amazing pie. Normally, pie would go bad in their refrigerator. But, always around this time, pie seemed to disappear quickly. They were eaten every evening, straight out of the refrigerator. Whether she needed a bit of comfort or he needed something sweet to finish off a good meal, each day the pie got smaller and smaller. Pie, especially pumpkin, seemed to be the best way to extend the holidays from one day into a week of being thankful, eating turkey, and enjoying the company of family and friends.
When I finally decided, I instantly regretted my decision, as I would have no matter what decision I made. But it was so worth it to taste the sweet spices of pumpkin and sugar against my lips and taste buds. I sighed in relief. I knew that, in my mind, I would chide myself for succumbing to what felt like my every whim. But that would have to hold. Right now, I was just going to enjoy.
(Edit: It took me more like 15 minutes to write just this because I was interrupted so much. It's not a lot...I think I could have written more but I was lacking the quiet time.)
