Melon Field 3 [Ammie]

Jul 08, 2008 23:47

On the far side of the island, quite a distance west from the town, there is a melon field. It lies between the edge of the forest and Memento Eden's largest lake, basking in the open sun. On occasion, water fowl waddle nearby, though the influx of visitors to the field seems to have scared them off. The soil nearby goes from hearty to moist and ( Read more... )

The rumors had intrigued him quite a bit. Rollo wasn't one to go around having fun with melons for the heck of it, but he couldn't help but be a bit curious. After all, blue and red melons? No matter how little he could remember, he knew that those colors were not only rare, but unnatural.

And yet, they looked as though they had been grown quite naturally. And apparently, they couldn't be broken? It wasn't as though he wanted to eat the melons, but it would still be interesting to try and break one. So his first move was to pull out the knife from his front pocket that he had arrived here with. He wandered over to the strangely colored melons, leaned down, and tried to expertly work the sharp tip of the knife into the skin of shining melon #5.

However much he dug at it, the rind didn't give way. The knife's tip glided over the melon's skin as if the melon were made of platinum, not fruity goodness.

Well, that was strange...maybe the rumors had more truth to them than he first thought. He stood up, looking carefully at the knife, then back at the melon. Trying to carefully work his way in obviously wasn't working, so...

He pointed the tip of the knife downwards toward the melon, throwing it expertly--although he wasn't quite sure how, exactly--in hopes that the accelerated speed would make an impact.

The knife harmlessly bounced off the melon.

A knife obviously didn't work. Rollo's next move was to pick the knife up from the ground, placing it gently in his pocket again. He picked up the melon and wondered if weakening the skin would do anything. He tried bouncing the melon as though it were a basketball.

Melons don't bounce well without substantial arm strength, but in any case, it neither changed shape nor broke.

Rollo picked up the melon, examining it closely. He walked to a nearby tree and chucked the melon at it with all his might. He was fairly certain by now that it wasn't going to work, but who knew.

The melon hit the tree, causing it to shake and putting a good dent in it, and fell to the ground, whole.

That was odd. The melon dented the tree? Was it made of metal or something? Rollo approached it and tapped on it with his knuckle, listening closely for the type of noise it made. And then he scraped at it with his knife once again.

Maybe the shell was metal or something...never mind the fact that they were grown naturally.

It sounded like a ripe, juicy melon. Mmm.

The scraping didn't do anything to the melon.

Obviously, trying to break the melon by conventional methods wasn't working very well. He was going to be wasting time if he stood here trying to break open the melon any longer. Instead, he decided to go back to town, where he had tools more readily available to him.

The melon stayed in the sink water without any apparent effect.

((Don't worry, you're good. Formatting-wise, anyway.)

After the soaking, the melon is still intact, and no softer than before.

Rollo gave up, finally taking the wet melon back to the field in hopes of finding a better one. No use wasting time on a melon that won't break. Especially since Rollo wasn't sure what else could (logically) work on these melons.

And so, the wet shiny melon was toted back. Tote tote tote.
