Networking on the job

The people I babysit for have a very cute dog, but unfortunately this dog has a tendency to want to run away. This happened to me for the first time--I had the front door open for a moment, and before I even realized that the dog was by me, the dog was out the door and running down the street.

I gave chase, but really, there was no way I was going to be able to compete with this dog. I knew that before when this happened, the family got calls from people who found the dog and all was usually well.

About an hour later, I got a call from people two houses down who said that they had the dog. I jogged down, leash in hand. A woman was waiting for me there, with the dog already on a leash of her own. She immediately noticed the shirt I was wearing, my Wellesley football shirt. (Someone at Wellesley made shirts that say, on the front "WELLESLEY FOOTBALL" and on the back your class year and "Undefeated Since 1875," since Wellesley obviously does not have a football team.) She asked about my shirt and I explained that I graduated from Wellesley.

As it turned out, so did she--class of '53. If we were in Massachusetts this wouldn't be all that remarkable, but in Louisville, Kentucky? That's pretty impressive. She wound up inviting me and the children into her house to meet her dog and cat, and she got my name, phone number, and email--mostly because her granddaughter is about to apply to Wellesley, and she wanted to know if she could contact me with questions and all that.

And that's my accomplishment for the day.
