I Survived the DMV and other bits as prelude to tomorrow

I thought the concept of having an appointment before going to the Department of Motor Vehicles was that it would make the experience less awful. Who knew?

I've just spent an hour getting my ID changed to the new address when I had an appointment. I felt terrible for all the people who'd walked in there without one. It was a pathetic mass of humanity, all leaning one way or another trying to revel in a stray blast of cool air from the overworked AC. The only benefit of an appointment was that I got to jump the line to have my picture taken. But then something happened to ruin even that experience.

Picture taker/thumbprint maker in his early 40s looks at my ID paperwork and says, "Wow! I bet nobody was named Melody when you were born! My daughter is named Melody but she's a little kid!" I replied, "actually, there was another dinosaur with that name in my grad class." Old lady behind me snorted a laugh in reply. The picture taker guy looked at me blankly. But it is with these little victories ...

Tomorrow I'll have a follow-up on yesterday's long post with even more long stuff on self-publishing, starting a publishing company, distribution and some other insane ideas.
