Tekkon Kinkreet

When I saw for the first time Tekkon Kinkreet on TV, even if the design was absolutely not my cup of tea, I decided to give it its chance, and was not disappointed.
Tekkon Kinkreet (a Japanese pun over the term "reinforced concrete", that's why the French title is "Amer Béton") is a movie several times rewarded that was released in 2006 and adapted from the Taiyo Matsumoto's manga.

The manga and the movie

Black and White, known as the Cats, are the rulers of Treasure Town. Nobody, except maybe the legendary Minotaur, is above these boys. But when a yakuza, the Snake, decides to turn Treasure Town into en entertainment park and to get rid of the Cats, Black must face new responsibilities and realities. Their city is changing, evolving. Very soon, the Snake's park is implanted. Has the city been changed to its core?

Black and White

Tekkon Kinkreet is my favorite movie, but strangely enough, it's hard for me to say why. I find that the whole movie is in the same time full of feelings and  yet very true. Almost every character has is own depth, for example White is not as innocent and naive that he seems to be: in fact, he sometimes understand all the gravity of the situation, and even deals with it. The Rat, one of the yakuzas, seems to have been blasé since he got out of the womb, yet he manages to not be totally disillusioned, and kind of charming.

A stalking cat

Snake

The Minotaur

Maybe it is also because the music, the graphics, the quality of the animation and the story create an unique atmosphere. Or maybe simply because of the so special relationship between Black and White. For me, the movie as a whole is really worthwhile.
