Today I had an alarmingly small amount of homework to do. A little law, a little math, and I was done. It took me less than an hour! Last night I was researching stuff for World History till 12, trying to remember it all, for a discussion we had today. (Fortunately, she didn't ask me any questions, so I didn't have to pretend I remembered any of it.) The discussion was on a piece by
Niccolò Machiavelli, (a famous political theorist (among other things) in the 16th C), called 'The Prince.' It's pretty famous, actually. It's a piece he wrote for royalty describing how a prince should act. Basically, to be a good, prince, he says (and a lot of his points are pretty valid), you need to know the art of war and how/when to wage it. That way, you'll be able to conquer land, expand your empire, and win etc. etc. He also says the number one way to control your people is to instill fear in them. As our class decided, though, he means be feared and loved; not be feared and hated, because if people are afraid of you but love you they'll do what you want but not come up with ideas of assassination. But if they hate you, you ose control. To keep them loving you, you have to be generous (but not too much), liberal (but not too much), among many other qualities. If you don't have those qualities, pretend to have them. And don't be too loving/generous a leader, because that's a sign you're weak, and you don't want to be pegged as that by rival leaders. It's quite interesting.
Another thing he stated was something along the lines of, 'men care more about their property than their fathers.' What do you think of that? I think I'll wait to see what you guys comment in response to this and then state my opinion. =] (sorry chantal but no typing yours =P you were in class for that discussion! I'm curious what other people think..)
Anyways so for World History, we have to do an essay worth 35% of our mark. (She's preparing us for university alright! O_O) We can write about anthing relating to history in some way from the 16thC to present because that's the timeline the unit covers. I have no problem with that, but I wish she'd give us a chance to start writing it NOW so we can start researching and stuff in out free time! I've got a topic, and I want to start working on this essay ASAP so I'm not scrambling at it last minute. Of course, I still have to get my topic approved, too. I want to write on the cause and effects of urbanization in the 20th C. I just took urban geography, so this stuff is fresh in my mind, and besides, I LOVE geography. Anything about urbanization or globalization or cities or land use...it just fascinates me. It runs in the family, I guess, though. Both my uncle and dad were into geography, and my dad even came really really close to getting his PhD in urban planning. =) I think a lot of his old term papers, his masters thesis, etc, will really help me with this essay. And I know he would be proud of me. ^_^
Haha, you know how people always marvel at the beauty of the lights or whatever when they fly over a city (or close to any form of land?) Well, I marvel at how the city is put together, how it runs, the layout it has...I just think it's really cool. ^_^
Man this really sucks. My family is, like, bashing all decisions I make about what I want to be...except being a lawyer. Which I'm going to be.
WELL THIS IS MY LIFE! NOT THEIRS! I appreciate everything they believe I can do. But hey! A little support and belief in me would be nice!!!!
argh. Ah well.
So today I finished my miniscule amount of homework, played the sims 2, and spent quite some time trying to figure out what exactly I could do, because I didn't have any school work due in the immediate future. There was absolutely nothing interesting on t.v, I didn't want to watch Who Wants to be a Millionaire or the News with my grandparents, and I didn't feel like going on the computer. Yet here I am. And it's only 8:47pm. (why must time move so slow, I want to go to bed already!!) :S
I also made some amazing discoveries:
1) I need to make money so I can go shopping
2) But I cna't spend too much, because I want to save some for March Break
3) But I really really really need new sweaters and shoes pants and books and...
4) Okay well I don't really need it, it's not a life and death matter, but it'd be nice to update my wardrobe.
5) I seriously do need a simple long sleeved white shirt or something to go with my brown cords, though...
6) There was another thing but I forgot what it was
7) And I don't know why I'm still wrting in lists! XD
anyways, gonna go.
ciao! <3
