we hauled our asses over the bridge to our favorite sushi restaurant, fuji on west portal. since m's parents were present we patiently waited for a spot at the bar and got the full treatment (omakaze style). let me try to remember everything they threw at us.
-first, hamachi, but it was a belly cut (buri-toro?), which made it extra delicious. i didn't need two pieces but that's what i got.
-maguro x2, which was good but has never been one of my favorites
-then everything gets fuzzy. something translucent with shiny skin that was good but unnamed. it may have been lopped off of someone else's nigiri.
-milkfish, which tasted a lot like what i have heard referred to as "snowfish." completely white, mild, meaty, soft but not squishy, and the best thing of the evening. another x2 but i'm not complaining. it was topped with something i couldn't identify. maybe ground almonds. they served it to a number of people but it was listed nowhere on the boards.
-toro, as good as ever but not remarkably so
-ocean trout x2, which i believe is steelhead, and one of my favorites
-a half dozen deep fried tiny crabs with chile sauce. i played with mine too much because it was adorable, and m ate it. i couldn't bring myself to chew HIS CUTE LITTLE CRUNCHY BODY.
-giant clam, which i made m eat. down with bivalves! unless they're scallops.
-suzuki, super fresh but i'm not into it (too crunchy)
-uni, which i only watched others eat (m: "it's like a tidepool in your mouth")
this in addition to miso-shiru, edamame, seaweed salad, and everything they slipped over the counter between nigiri -- sauced bits of tuna and scallions; crazy pickly okra with tobiko; chunks of what may have been bonito with shiso leaf, grated radish, and lemon; jalapeño stuffed with salmon, deep fried and drizzled with a little mustard.
for dessert they gave us drunken fruit. mango, orange, and strawberry with plum wine poured over it.
it was insanely busy, which is well-deserved. they always take care of us and have a ridiculous amount of fun doing so. i think it's the most we've ever paid there but it was enough for about three meals.
(i didn't get my dinosaur foot. maybe next time.)
