Costuming 365: Or, do it all in two days. Whichever.
I knew when I decided to do the costuming 365 project that ALEP was already a lost cause at that point and Halloween was going to be insane as well and neither event would really benefit from my newly adopted determination to not procrastinate. So in that vein, I stayed up for about 31 hours yesterday and today to get Jonah's R2D2 done for his "Pretend Party" at school and I can say my efforts were not wasted, though now I want to completely remake everything but the helmet.
I'll get better pics when I put it back together. But there's the general idea.
In the 20 minutes he wore it for the costume parade this morning at school, it came apart in all sorts of ways. It needs to be wider so he can walk normally (although the fit makes him walk more like R2D2). And I need to do something else on shoulder straps. I had hoped those would pull double duty to look like Artoo's "shoulders". But I'm thinking something small, narrow and discrete there would be better and then I can make him some pauldron type things. Plus I had hoped to make some things to go around his wrist that will look like the cuffs at Artoo's "feet". All I had was heat set velcro and of course that melted my craft foam a bit. But I've got templates for all those fiddly bits on there now, so I could probably remake this thing entirely in a matter of a couple of hours. Not the 50 something hours I spent on it.
I'm wicked happy with how the helmet came out, though. It needs more clear coat and maybe some touch ups and some more detail work done. But I'm pleased with it and will proudly let him wear it as his regular bike helmet.
Now I've got to throw my Leia together ASAP. But I'm kind of delirious right now and don't think I should be operating a sewing machine. I've gotten about 2.5 hours of sleep in the past 36 hours. Maybe more coffee is in order.
After Halloween, I'm going to take a solid week off, clean up the office completely and start fresh the second week of November. I've got a costume I want done near the end of January (and at this point, I'm not sharing what it is) and I will not have another sleepless night because of costuming, unless I just really want to stay up and work on something.
