Likewise! I'm so glad to meet some people who are kind of nearby. When I got home and realized you guys were from Memphis, I was very happy to hear that. :)
Definitely a great first con! I had gone to ALEP which is a tiny (like 120 or so people) Tolkien convention (if you can even call it that) before I experienced my first Dragon*Con. They really don't even compare. This was more like a mini-D*C, so a good taste of what it would be like without the crowds and the craziness and the scheduling conflicts and such. I'm hoping our new convention center will be done by the next one. Surely they'll have smaller facilities for something like this in addition to the huge conferences they're hoping to bring in. Of course, that might be out of GMX's budget. Who knows.
There were some obvious signs of a new con, for sure. But overall, I thought the staff was doing a fantastic job of making sure everyone had what they needed and keeping things running smoothly. The distribution of information before the con was a little bit shaky, I guess. I'd like to see them add a specific costuming track next year, instead of dropping those panels in under other categories. And as Janine and I discussed, I think there's a LOT more room for writer's panels. There seems to be a lot of interest in that.
We've done some fun home parties for Jonah in the past. Nothing like this, but still productions as far as I'm concerned. At this point, I'm loving the simplicity of showing up somewhere, letting the kids play, bringing a cake and being done with it in 2 hours or so. Maybe when he turns 16 we'll have a huge blowout or something. I've got 11 years to think about that. ;)
