I found the best way to get Sarah (our oldest) out of diapers was comparing her to her baby sister, Emily. "Well, you know how babies are - they poop in their diapers because they're too little to use the potty!" Of course this requires a little sibling in the house to work most effectively... ;-)
As to Emily, she took a looooooong time, didn't see the need to use the potty until she was four, for crying out loud. Looking back, what I should have done was let her sit in her dirty diapers until I "had time" to change them...and take longer and longer to find time to do so. There's no loss to a kid if they're always cleaned up right away. A little discomfort goes a long way at that age... Anyway, what finally worked for her was your basic bribe: She wanted a Nativity set in the worst way (Sarah had a plastic one she liked to play with) but I told her that Nativity sets were for Big Kids, so if she wanted one... *
