Last minute push, for those who haven't seen this.

I realized I've been retweeting this, but I hadn't put it up here.

The short of it is, there's this wonderful soul, Melissa "Fiver" Kern, who in 2007 was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). I've not yet had the pleasure of meeting Mel face to face, but I've read many of her LJ posts since her diagnosis and the whole story just absolutely breaks my heart.

When rumor (and lawsuits) were flying around about The Hobbit movie finally being made, there was a push to have her included in the film as an extra. I participated in signing the petition. It seems like such a small thing that will mean so much to her. She certainly deserves it for facing this thing head on and with her sense of humor and love of life intact.

Now, there's another way to help show support for her and help fund ALS research. Fiver's Flamingos are a group of runners and friends who are headed to Disney World this weekend to run the Princess 1/2 Marathon in Mel's honor. This year they've teamed up with The ALS Association of Georgia to help raise some money to find both a cure and treatments for ALS. Wish I could be there with them (maybe next year), but I'm trying to do what I can to help them spread the word and gather donations.

Please, if you don’t mind, would you donate 1$ for every mile they are running? That would be 13.1 miles for $13.10. And even if all you have is $1 total, every little bit helps. Just click on the button, you don’t even need a paypal account to donate, just a credit card. 100% of your donation (minus the small fee paypal takes) goes to the ALS Association of Georgia. Not one penny goes towards administering this group or paying race fees, etc.
