Stuff and things.

1. As it turns out, The Sickness seems as though it may have been some sort of flu. I continued to get worse and worse everyday until it finally came to a head on Friday. There was a point that evening when I was laying on the couch, shivering with fever, aching all over, head feeling full of gunk, and throat on fire. As icing on the cake, Jonah while playing on me (yes on me), headbutted me in the brow bone just above my eye with the hardest part of his forehead. I couldn't help it, I started to cry. It was all too much, being emotionally and physically worn down.

2. Chris has been infinitely patient with me as I've been sick. The house just kept getting worse and worse as I did. Thursday and Friday, I couldn't even bring myself to cook dinner and it fell on him to pick something up. I've thanked him privately, but I wanted to praise him publicly for his patience and help while I was on the mend.

3. Jonah had his first Valentine's Day party at school on Friday. I had high hopes of making Valentine's and a nice fruit tray for his class. But those plans fell through to dragging myself out at 7:30pm Thursday to pick up prepared fruit and commercial Valentines. Ah well, it's the first of I'm sure many more years and next year Jonah might even be able to help.

4. Luckily, my sickness broke up suddenly on Saturday, just in time for Valentine's Day. I even felt well enough to get out and pick up the yard where the roofers had moved stuff away from the house to keep from damaging things and didn't put them back where they found them. We put Jonah to bed early and I got all dressed up for a lovely, quiet evening at home together. Chris gave me an orchid (another Phalaenopsis, but a different colored one than the two I already have) and cooked us a beautiful dinner. See:

A perfectly seared ribeye, white asparagus with green onion vinaigrette, and a blue cheese stuffed prosciutto wrapped sweet potato.

5. As vaguely mentioned above and on my whiny "I'm sick" post last week, we got our roof on Thursday. The contractor came out on Saturday to have us sign the completion letter and pay him the final bit (our deductible). I have to say, I slightly regret choosing the light brown color we went with instead of a high contrast charcoal. But who cares, it's a roof and I just can't care about the color too much. It coordinates with the brick well enough, it just sort of blends in with it instead of standing out.

6. The day the roofers came out, I noticed about a 10-15 foot section of the fencing we didn't get around to replacing last year had fallen down. As I went over to it to try to rig it back up (or at least get it off the neighbor's fence), I noticed the ceder log post that had been supporting it had rotted off at the ground. So, I guess that will have to be our next major outdoor project once it gets reliably warmer (and we can save up some more money to replenish savings from the roof). *sigh* Homeownership. . . it's always something.

7. I've spent the early part of this week starting to plan my gardens. I feel like there's less to plan this year for some reason. Maybe it's just because I haven't gotten into the flowers yet. In an effort to be a cheapskate, I think I'm going to try to harvest pepper seeds from varieties we typically buy (habenero, jalapeno, Anaheim, got some poblano seeds from some peppers I used last night, etc.). For every variety I can cross off my list to buy, I can save $2-$3 per type. I've already got some cubanelle seeds and some roma and cherry tomato seeds on hand. I think I might just find a couple of heirloom types I like (thinking the ultra sweet orange ones we grew last year and my all time favorite Mr. Stripey) and then call that quits for the tomatoes. I want to do two plants of the cherry and romas this year so that would make 6 plants which is plenty for us and our tiny plot I think. As for everything else, I've already got yellow and zucchini squash, eggplant, watermelon, cucumber, pumpkin, honey dew, and cantaloupe seeds. I also might get some more of that Buttercrunch Bibb lettuce I grew last year started this weekend. I know it's only week three of February, but I feel so far behind on this already!

8. I haven't run in over a week and it's driving me nuts! I should have run last Wednesday. Had I known I was only going to get worse, I would have. Once I had sat out enough days to feel like I could get back out there again, I've now got a weird ankle issue I'm having to work out. I didn't do anything specific to it (that I know of), but Monday morning, it kept wanting to randomly roll outwards and would pull the outer muscles and tendons when it would. I've kept it wrapped up for the past two days and it felt better after being on it more yesterday (so some light exercise seems like what it needs). I've got it wrapped again today and might take Jonah on a walk around the neighborhood later. I should do some yoga too, I'm sure. It always seems to cure what ails me. If it's not improved by tomorrow, I'll go see a sports doctor. I hate putting off my training, but I don't want to do something I can't undo.

9. My mother-in-law came up for a visit yesterday and we went to lunch and to get Jonah a new pair of shoes (which he's needed for quite some time). He's a size and a half larger than he was in the fall when we last bought him shoes. I opted to hold off on sandals until later. It's quite possible by mid-summer that he'd be another half size larger. His foot is a little less wide now though. He's just a wide, no longer an extra wide. Last time they said that will happen as he loses some baby fat and begins to stretch out. Speaking of the munchkin, he seems to be doing fine and we go in for our follow up appointment tomorrow.

Guess that's all for now.
