Today it rained. Quite a lot.
Lana had a class at uni today. We went in to the city, and wandered around a bit until it was time for her to start. One of the things that we had a look at was
Johanneskirken. It's a red brick Church, and while Lana has apparently always admired it by far, she'd never gone inside. Yay for visiting friends forcing you to see more of your own city, eh?
So we went inside. It was very much different to all of the Roman Catholic Churches I've been in on this trip. Much less ornate and decorative. But... to me, anyway, it felt more welcoming. Not sure why. There was someone practicing on the organ while we were in the Church... it was very pleasant.
Lana showed me a couple of typical Bergen streets... one street with a road at about a 45 degree angle. That one and others with the pretty little wooden houses that are all over the place :)
After that, she went to class and I wandered about on my own for a while. I did some window shopping, and walked around their artificial lake. And then it started pouring down, so I went inside to keep dry for a bit :p
We met up again, and as the rain had cleared, went for a trip up one of the mountains that surround Bergen -
Fløyen. From up there, because the fog had cleared a bit, we were able to see the whole city... and I could see the top of
Grieg Hall. Lana had told me a couple of times that it's shaped like a piano, but it is only really visible from the top. And of course, the place is named for
Edvard Grieg (who was born in Bergen), composer of the
Peer Gynt suite (among other things). Part of which George and I used to play a duet of :)
Later, we were due to meet up with a friend of Lana's, and her baby. Something happened to the baby during birth, which has affected her neck - she has physiotherapy and the like for it... but even with that, is in quite a bit of pain because of it. So we weren't sure if we would actually be able to meet up with them, because baby had an appointment this afternoon which have been known to make her rather unhappy.
Baby was rather unhappy at times, but she was happy (and sleeping at times) for long enough to allow us to do a tiny bit of attempted shopping, and then eat our dinner - so that was nice :) It was nice to meet them both, coz I've heard quite a lot about them ;)
Dinner, though. That was specialness :) Lana has been telling me about Swedish plank steak for years. About how glorious and wonderful and awesome it was. She had talked it up rather immensely, I admit. But she didn't overrate it. It was YUMMY. A picture can be found
here - though it isn't exactly what we had. Ours was steak, with sauce on the side, the potato piped around the edge, some green beans wrapped in bacon, and half a tomato, roasted. Soooo good.
Before we were able to order dinner, baby woke up and was quite upset - so she and her mother went home. Lana and I, however, had dessert! I had a kind of caramel baked apple thing, and she had a blueberry creme brulee with mixed berries on the side. Yum.
And that is the excitement of today! Tomorrow, we go touring the fjords!
