When did reading comics become a chore?

I'm trying to keep up to date on stuff but since a lot of my titles tie in to the stupid Secret Invasion storyline I have to slog through that before I can really understand what's going on.

It's massive arcs like Invasion and Civil War that make me feel a heck of a lot better about reading digitized comics.  When the War happened I was still buying comics and most of the time the tie-ins wouldn't make it into my reserve pile so I'd miss out on huge chunks of the story.  At least now it's easier to catch up if there's a tie-in (or twenty).

Bad art is another pet peeve.  I'd be reading the Angel comic if the art didn't give me headaches.  Good art makes me want to own the book, bad art makes me want to shred it.
