Furry Friday

I'm rethinking if/how I want to continue the Furry Friday posts. Not every week, certainly, but probably once a fortnight. (Old English "feorwertyne niht" means fourteen nights.  It's a word blend similar to the American (Texan) holiday "Juneteenth" referring to June 19th.)

I think I want to have 3 sections: animals, stories, how to help.  Of course, the animals are available only locally here in the Twin Cities, but I'd like for the other 2 sections to be generic enough to be meaningful for a reader wherever they're located. This is still MY blog, though, and is about my animal encounters and my thoughts, not meant to be specific to where I work. Any ideas or suggestions?

Animals: To start, I'm very pleased to report that Pippa found a new home.  I was concerned that she had either emotional or neurological problems, especially after I found her seemingly-dead in her cage one day.  A few days before adoption, I saw her out of her cage playing on the floor with volunteers who were giving the rabbits some social and exercise time.  It turns out that Pippa was a lap rabbit!  She eagerly jumped up onto the volunteer's lap to solicit more petting.  I'm glad she found a human to care for her in a new home.

Our organization has been developing ties with other groups throughout the nation.  We usually have extra room to house dogs, so we are beginning to take shipments of dogs from far away cities that have too many dogs to adopt out.  I've started visiting the dog kennels to meet the many temporary residents waiting for new homes.  We've had a large number of pit bull mixes in recent days.  They've been adorable, though, and have disappeared quickly too.  I notice that some of the animals I pet yesterday are already gone from our website listing.  Fast adoptions, indeed.

The only dog I recognize on the website at the moment is Jazz.  She is a 4 year old spayed female with an unusual appearance.  Her breed is listed as "Catahoula Leopard X Unknown".  I haven't seen a dog with her color markings before.  If you're looking for an eye-catching pet, Jazz will certainly get both of you some attention.  You can meet her yourself at our Golden Valley adoption floor.

Story:  Local news sites do themselves a disservice by eliminating the urls for stories they report.  I can't find sources for the two news items that I had planned to tell you about in this edition.  Luckily, someone snagged a video and uploaded it to YouTube for one of the tales.  Both stories involve Facebook and my organization.  First, one of our Marketing employees Deb Balzer found her long-lost sister via Facebook.

Inspired by this reunion, though, an employee in our Coon Rapids facility tried to help one of our lost & found cats by using Facebook.  Sure enough, they were able to find the cat's original owner, who had lost the cat about half a year earlier.  The animal survived the winter season and still managed to end up in its old home.  Apparently this kind of owner/pet story has happened before on Facebook.  A quick web search turned up several cases.  An unexpected bonus from social networking sites!

Next issue:  One dog breaks away, and I work to fix the damaged computer equipment.
