IAC 09 Week 1

Jun 27, 2009 15:09

So Week 1 of camp officially ends with Sunday, but it's pretty much over for me as I have Saturday and Sunday off this week. My first week of work was really great. The primary responsibility of my position is helping patrons. Fennell Music Library has completely closed stacks- the patrons have no access to the sheet music and recording themselves, so a big part of my job is just fetching the things people want. But most of the time they need a little help finding what they want, and sometimes I spend quite a bit of time with a student or faculty member helping them choose music as well as teaching them how to search the catalog effectively, which can be a lot of fun and really gratifying. Checking out, checking in, and shelving are other things that take up a lot of our time. We also do other projects that Laurie needs done around the library, and I've actually taken on a couple of projects of my own design that I've been working on during slow times. Laurie has pretty much given me and Amy carte blanche to do just about anything we want to improve the patron experience in FML. So in addition to things I'm already working on, I have a few ideas and I hope I have time to do some of them over the next five weeks.

Another big perk about my job is that I get to stay in the air-conditioned library for most of the day- A/C is in short supply around this campus. Last week it was in the 80s most days, but having experienced 110+ in the Valley, I wasn't fazed. I didn't have to rehearse in an outdoor venue like most of the students, though. That's gotta be rough.

Outside work, I'm really missing the comforts of home, and I'm having trouble distracting myself from the fact that it's still over a month until I see Mark again. But the days are passing fairly quickly and it's all downhill from here. Every second that passes brings me closer to that plane ride home.

This weekend is the Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale, so bake something vegan if you have the means. I'll be dreaming of these.
