hopefully this'll make it to you before you close up shop.
i meant to reply to this post when i first read it but i was about to leave the house as i recall.
this entry hit me--you as a child sound similar to me as a child. really.
& it's more & more difficult to live green, especially in big cities where the recycling programs aren't as good (hello, NYC & chicago). some things i've done:

i save all take-out containers that can possibly be reused--some i use as lunchboxes, or to store things, or whatever. those big yogurt containers that can't be recycled here, i use them to hold leftovers.
i reuse paper & plastic bags.
i reuse produce bags. if they're wet i rinse them & let them dry.
i reuse ziplock bags.
i try to carry a plastic shopping bag in my purse, and if i go out for coffee or food that ends in recycleables it'd be easy to throw away with no recycling nearby, i put them in the bag, tie it shut, and take it home to recycle.
i do try to shop thrift stores, & trade clothes i've got that i won't wear again.
i try to make food from scratch whenever possible; i'm a good cook and it's better for us than eating out, saves money, and reduces trash.
our washing machine is routed to use grey water on azaleas. (though i have mixed feelings about this. it was already installed when we moved in.)
i use rinse water (from the sink) to water plants.
we really try hard to not buy things made of plastic or pvc.
we buy 'green'er cleaning materials from wild oats or trader joe's.
we're vegetarian.
if you have a balcony, you can grow tomatoes in the city if your summers are hot enough...

hm.
probably you've already thought of all these.

anyway, i will miss you if you do close up shop. please drop me a note sometimes. you can reach me through my web site or stay in touch with what i'm doing through the mailing list thingamajig.

oh yeah and ditto on the taking canvas bags for grocery shopping, and natural spectrum light bulbs, and farmers' markets. i try to buy organic and fair trade as much as our budget allows. i try to give business to our local co-op and natural foods stores. we purchase some things from regular supermarkets or trader joe's though. tucson is pretty good for living green. it was pretty difficult for me to do as much in chicago.
