It was too late. You couldn’t back out. You couldn’t run away. You had to go through with this. You had to say yes. You have to stand there up at the front. You have to stare into his beautiful blue-green eyes and say two words; two simple words. It shouldn’t be this hard. You were the one who asked the question knowing that when this day came you’d stand with him and say two words that you thought you’d never say to another man, or hell, sometimes you didn’t think you’d ever say them to a female and yet, here you are.
Your pulse speeds up as they come in to tell you everyone is ready and that you need to take your place up in front. Your head starts to spin as you start walking towards the door. There’s a chance he’ll say no. A chance he’ll change his mind because he finally realized that he doesn’t love you. He wouldn’t do that though, would he? No! There is no way he’d say no and walk out of your life. He wouldn’t do that and you wouldn’t let him. He was your life, your heart, your soul, you won’t let him leave you and if he tries, you’ll fight back and fight hard to prove to him you love him.
You push open the door and see him standing at the altar in a black tuxedo with his father standing behind him. He looked amazing. He always looks amazing. It always made you wonder how such a well-dressed guy would settle for you. You’re the guy who would wear a flannel shirt most of the time. The guy who only really owned one jacket and it was your high school lettermen jacket.
You aren’t sure why he chose you. Not sure what made him say yes to date you in the first place. You had been so horrible to him. Throwing him in the dumpster on regular basis, or tossing a slushie on him whenever you had the chance. You were horrible to him and don’t deserve him. But he said yes. He gave you the chance to prove that you’re a great guy; that you care about him.
Then, on the day of your three-year anniversary you got down on one knee. His eyes were big and you could never forget how big his smile was. The way he started to cry when you said his name, and the quick nod because he couldn’t find the words. He was gorgeous that day and you’ll never be able to forget the way he looked at that moment. The moment when you knew you’d do anything to make him happy and that you truly did want to be with him forever.
Now, you aren’t having second thoughts, you are just scared of the future. You’re scared that he’ll say no or realize that you aren’t worth his time. You take your place across from him and you can’t take your eyes off of him as the minister talks. He’s perfect and when the minister asks him the one question you’ve been dreading, he says yes. Your heart stops beating as you take in everything he is. Then it’s your turn to answer the question. There’s nothing really stopping you now. He’s shown you that your doubts have no real value. So, with a smile and still not taking your eyes off of him, you decide to take that jump and trust that you can be with him, for the rest of your life.”
