5 movies about Scotland

For the love of Scotland!

The first time I went to Scotland, the tour guide kept mentioning Maid of Honor all the way back from the Highlands, because we drove by places that had been in the movie. Considering I went back to unicorn land this year, while I was riding through the mountains I thought of this Top 5. So here it is. :D

Maid of Honor

I already named it so it goes first. Maid of Honor is about Patrick Dempsey in love with his best friend, who is engaged to a Scot (kilt and castle included). So he has to go to Scotland to be her 'maid of honor' and be part of all the wedding celebrations. We see real scots, castles, the highlands, beautiful accents, real pubs and so much about the culture of modern Scotland, it's a feast! Every time I watch it, I remember the tour guide so it's a bittersweet feeling. It's a fun movie, though.

Trainspotting

I watched Trainspotting when it first came out and I've never watched it again, but I never forgot about it either. It's set in Glasgow. Follows the life of drugs, sex and rock&roll (kinda) of five young people in that city. It's a very raw movie that still manages to capture the city and the people in it. It made Ewan McGregor and Danny Boyle famous, but what I remember most is the baby scene and Robert Carlyle (because he looks like my father).

Burke & Hare

This one's a comedy starring Andy Serkins (Gollum) and Simon Pegg (SIMON!!!). It's about the real life story of Burke and Hare, two good-for-nothing men who lived in the 1800s and made a small fortune by selling dead bodies to the University of Edimburgh (doctors need bodies to practice). The thing is bodies started to become scarce so they started killing people to keep the business going. It's a very dark subject but this movie is not. When you go to Edimburgh, the signs of these two guys are everywhere and there isn't a tour that doesn't mention them or their business, so it's all history and story wrapped into one.

One Day

Set in Edimburgh as well, it tells the story of two friends who always meet on one day (june 15th) every year, to catch up. That's how we see their story and their relationship, by seeing what happens on June 15th for over fifteeen years of friendship. It's such a pretty story and you can really see the city everywhere. I mean, look at that poster! I loved this movie for the story, sure, but also because of the city in the background. So, so pretty.

Sunshine on Leith

Leith is right next to Edimburgh, by the coast, and in this movie you see a lot of it (and of Edimburgh too). The movie is about two young men who go back to Leith after fighting in the War, how they re-settle and fall in love and try to get on with their lives. Did I mention it's a musical? No? Well, it's a musical!! It's based on a play and the music is so pretty. The final number, right in front of the Gallery by the Train Station in Edimburgh, gives me goosebumps every time I watch it. It makes me CRY, because it's so pretty and happy and just... oh.
