Story Summary: Jensen Ackles had only fallen in love once in his life, and that was with someone he’d never met. After all these years, even knowing death was standing beside him, it was the one thing he had never regretted.
Now in a nursing home, Jensen tells his great niece the story of the greatest love of his life, when he was at his lowest point of his life. During World War II, Jensen had been a Spitfire pilot but he’d lost both his legs in a training accident. While he was convalescing, he had volunteered to man the control tower radio station. On 12th November 1944, alone in the night shift, Jensen’s melancholy brooding is interrupted by the voice of a Polish bomber pilot over the radio.
Squadron Leader Jared Padelecki’s plane is badly damaged, all his crew have bailed out. The airman is trying to stay aloft long enough to make sure his plane is far out to sea before he crashes, to avoid any civilian casualties. He is injured badly, and his parachute shot to pieces.
Although both men know there is no chance of Jared surviving, they swap stories to pass the time, and in doing so, each of them realises that if circumstances had been different, they could have had something special together.
