links

A friend of mine forwarded me this site: http://www.bigissueground.com/ as something "interesting" that I should check out. Sometimes, I find such suggestions patronizing, but I did look at it. Some of the essays are sophmoric, but they do contain food for thought and it is always impressive to me that people take the time to try to convince people to think the way they do. Anyways (or to speak Midwestern--anywho), I hope that if you're reading my journal that you enjoy the link or find something that is thoughtprovoking there.

I also like this site http://www.thesunmagazine.org/ for the essays. I"m thinking about submitting this (probably because I've had half a glass of wine and just wrote it). Please tell me before Sept 1 if you think it sucketh. Oh yeah...the theme was 'help'.

Help! I need someone. Help! Not just anyone…

Help! The proliferation of self-help books has got me thinking. Why do we all need so much help anyway? Do we really feel empty in some way? Or, is there such a suggestion-through the different media sources-of emptiness, that we feel obligated to do something. We MUST always strive for improvement and we MUST do so on our own. Celebrities and academics MUST have the answers and we MUST follow.

What happened to the days when people called on their God, their relatives, their friends? What happened to the days when people were just glad to be alive and were focused on surviving the day? Is this progression? Or, is it a money making scheme aimed at uncovering and increasing our insecurities our feelings of inadequacy for pieces of gold and silver.

Maybe the authors of self-help books do indeed feel that they are helping people. Some of them undoubtedly do help people change their lives. But, I still wonder…why do people need someone else to tell them how to solve their own problems? In reality, does anyone really know us better than we know ourselves?
