So, yesterday I finally updated my Thorki longfic my god when did it become a long why with chapter 9. I already said elsewhere how painful it was to write those 6K, but I think the success had to be commemorated by mentioning it a second time :-P
Whew. That's why I never publish unfinished long stories; I'm bound to hit some major bump along the way and start dragging things. This one has hit 15K+ and doesn't seem to be closing as soon as I hoped. I'd say three more chapters, but who knows?
Better start on the new one while I'm in a decent mindset.
Movies. Gotta watch Thor The Dark World, even if it will be painful.
Hoping
astolat will publish her own version, that will be mind-blowing.
(Disney and Marvel better start working on character development and consistency very soon.)
Aand, The Mentalist. Again.
kikimay and I shared a laugh and some despair about it while discussing the latest episode, 6x08 Red John - as you can guess, the serial killer's identity was finally revealed, so skip this if you don't want to be spoiled.
The more I think about this episode, the less I know what to think.
I'm not taking back the rant about McAllister, that's for sure; god knows there could have been nobody less suitable than him. Hello? Red John was supposed to be a learned, refined bastard. The type who takes tea on an comfy armchair while reading William Blake and listening to Johann Sebastian freaking Bach. Not some rifle-wielding sheriff with rough boots, rough manners and the face of a cowboy-grandpa amenable to sit on the back porch of your cabin with a beer in hand, and a story on the Old West ready.
This is what should make him right? Because it's so unbelievable that it reveals the extent of RJ's wondrous powers of deception? Puh-lease. We wanted to be surprised, not treated as idiots.
The main problem, in my opinion, is that RJ's identity was decided way too late. Other than badly. Approximately a year ago, as Heller and the actor playing McAllister said.
A year ago? Damnit, when you create a series as long and complex as this one, you have to have made specific plans on the main antagonist. Who he is seems the least, to me, if you want some consistency in the end (سಥ益ಥ)س You can't just go on your merry way and patch it up when you've got one season left, deadlines threatening you into the least incovenient choice. That's. Not. Professional.
As a storyteller, these things make me go bonkers. The Mentalist is such a high quality product, so rare these days - how could they botch up such fundamental a detail?
Not to mention that, in the light of a description I read recently thanks to Kiki, Red John comes off as a ginormous Evil!Gary Stue. Yes, even considering the great help he received from the Blake Association. I mean, he just had to fly like Superman and he had it all *laughs*
Oh well. At least, I've redeemed the pidgeon scene a bit. As someone in some forum said, Cordero was looking for hard objects while serching Jane; he probably felt the bird, but thought nothing of a soft bump that could have been two messy kerchiefs in a pocket. Jane had tucked it in well, as magicians working with animals do (he grew up in a circus, after all). And he was moving wisely.
And. The fact that he'd spotted not only the whole bomb trick, but also RJ's true phobia and prepared accordingly way early, pidgeon gun and location, feels like a real victory.
Jane didn't overcome RJ in the church. He won days before with his brains. Finally, finally he was ahead in the game, when it most mattered, and I love Heller for this.
Let's just forget McAllister pathetic escape, all right. And the fact that RJ demise deserved much more building in drama and suspense, not to end at 1/3 of the series. Moreover, why didn't he start trying to kill the team when things got difficult? Seems downright out of character on top of convenient.
Yes, I wrote one season, because I think the sixth will be the last. Think and hope. They've left so much of it without RJ, it feels like they're wrapping things up. Jane must find true peace, true happiness; he will, and his destiny will fade into a bright sunset.
Adding another season would be risking it. A year ago the public response wasn't encouraging, some say. It seems 6 almost got canceled, so I think they decided to bring everything to a close now.
If they do, it's better this way. I love the Mentalist, but I've always been afraid of series dragging out. Look what happened to ER, Charmed, Friends and so many others.
Well. I guess we'll see. I'm definitely looking forward to the future developments!
If they don't give me some super Jisbon, I'm going into a rampage :D
