Two Free Stories You Should All Read

Jun 02, 2010 19:14

I love short stories. I read them every day, now that the internet sees fit to provide me with a smorgasboard of goodness all over the place. (poke me if you want some online magazine recs, I can hook you up.)

This week I read two stories that just knocked my socks off, so I decided to rec them to you guys.

1.) The Days of Flaming Motorcycles by Cat Valente, AKA yuki_onna

This is not your every day zombie story. I swear just the other day I remarked to my roommates that I wanted someone to do something really new and interesting with zombies. Not so much scarier zombies, or even grosser zombies. Different zombies. This is that story.

The protagonist is just the kind of hopeful, introverted notebook-scribbler that makes me feel like I could be her.

Plus! As a bonus, I offer you the LJ post where Cat describes visiting this story's setting, Augusta, Maine, as "...like 20 times more likely to harbor an ancient evil than Bangor." AND THEN SHE WENT AND WROTE IT.

Tio Gilberto and the Twenty-Seven Ghosts by Ben Francisco

Aaaaak! They went and moved Tio Gilberto! While I hunt another link, if you do audio you can hear it here: Podcastle

Do you remember Phantom Dennis? From Angel? How adorable was that ghost?

Well, the ghosts in this story are sadder than Dennis, but no less adorable. The protagonist is a gay twentysomething who decides to spend the summer with his Tio Gilberto in San Francisco, and winds up meeting a lot of people - some of them even visible.

What have you read that you loved, lately? Share please!

Also, if you decide to read these stories, do come back and tell me what you think.
