This is a Reeeeeeeally old fic, guys. Like, seriously. I started it as a 5 Things fic, in response to a colors challenge at eppescest...in May of 2007. /headdesk./ Obviously, the fic is no longer recognizable as 5 things fic, but you may have detected residual instances of color significance. ;)
It was partly inspired by East of the Sun, West of the Moon. At one point in that story Don uses a code that only Charlie will recognize; I loved that, and muse Madeleine just had to have a code of her own to play with.
I've lost count of the number of drafts it's been through since then. Suffice it to say I would have given up on it years ago, if not for the encouragement of my slashwife emmademarais. She has read this fic more times than any alpha or beta should be expected to and put up with pity parties galore. She convinced me to let it be for a while. Then, when I was ready, she rolled up her sleeves and dug in (again) and helped me find a new approach that actually works. I am so thankful

Wow! I really liked the brotherly relationship here. I'm extremely new to this fandom and my incest experience is literally hours old, but the little bit I've read seems to separate their brother and lover aspects. I really liked that in this one, they're brothers and lovers both, all the time.
I like the secret code bit. Wow, that made my muses sit up and take notice. :)

Well welcome to the fandom! And thank you!
I guess maybe I'm not as good as some writers at envisioning the compartmentalization an FBI Agent is capable of - but in my head Don can't forget Charlie is his brother, even for a moment, even when he would probably rather forget.
Ooh yay another code-loving muse! There can never be enough code stories.
God mel, i just adore it. I am glad u did not let it languish on ur harddrive forever. There is such many beautiful turns of phrases and mental images that just make the whole thing tasty from end to end. And you nailed the interplay between Don and Charlie so effortlessly, moving from brother interactions to lover interactions fluidly and authentically. Brava, my dear. /applauds/ you give great cest ♥*♥
I know this fic was a nightmare to finish, but I'm so proud of you for sticking with it and finally getting it published. I'd call it your redheaded child, but that would only mean it was the most loved. /grins/ Let's call it your problem child instead. Hehehe But you worked hard, spent many hours and persevered and it's DONE! You get to celebrate your victory in this battle and consider yourself the conquering heroine! Huzzah!

So revel in your success, enjoy the comments to come and consider yourself a more seasoned author for not having trunked this story and instead turning it into a very enjoyable piece for the cesting reading community.

Hee! /enjoys picturing self in Jeanne D'Arc getup/
I only wish I'd signed up for this fic at ficfinishing, so I could crow over there and encourage everyone.
If any of my stories was going to get trunked, it was this one. Wonder which old chestnut of mine will be next?
