Miguel is only silent when he sleeps.

Well, not completely silent, but he's at least a lot quieter than any other time of day or night. He snores and grinds his teeth and mumbles nonsense under his breath, but that's all easy enough for Manuel to ignore. Manuel can pretend that he's silent, and if he stays awake for just an hour longer, or if he awakens just an hour earlier, he can watch Miguel as he sleeps, quiet and still.

Well, not completely still because he rolls around restlessly and kicks and pulls the blankets every which way and smacks Manuel's arm out of the way in an unconscious movement when Manuel rubs a finger against his noise or ear just lightly enough to tickle.

That's all besides the point. Like this, not quite silent and not quite still, Manuel can watch Miguel unimpeded. He can lie as close as he'd like to him, and no one will think anything of it. He can share the same, moist air as him. He can watch the soft light of the moon or the warmth of the sunrise throw streams of silver and gold across Miguel's face, and he doesn't have to feel such acute embarrassment because it's only him, Miguel, and a snapshot in time.

He can listen to the sound of his own name whispered softly against the pillows.

So maybe it's a good thing that Miguel isn't all that silent, even when he sleeps.
