The smoke curled in lazy swirls from Martín's cigarette, tangling in the air and tickling the ceiling. He tapped the ashes off the tip into a small, white saucer, dusting grey and black specks across the counter when he didn't make it in time. With one hand he swiped the mess onto the floor before returning to read the paper laid out before him. There was something about a political scandal in some European country on the front page, nothing surprising really, and besides, Martín would get to hear about it first hand in a week or so, so he flipped past to the sports section to see what the Uruguayan commentators had to say about the game they had lost against Argentina.

He did not look up when Sebastián entered the room, until his cousin cleared his throat. Only then did he reluctantly tear his eyes from the paper to raise an eyebrow at him.

"Good morning to you too," he said, attempting to read Sebastián's impassive features with little success.

"You can't smoke in here," Sebastián replied, which was a lie because the air in his kitchen always carried a light scent of tobacco that Martín knew could not be attributed solely to his infrequent visits.

"This is about last night, isn't it? Would you just get over yourself-"

Sebastián spoke over him, lifting his chin as he said, "You can smoke outside if you're so inclined."

It was the peak of winter, and while the weather was really not that bad compared to some of his more remote regions, like hell Martín was going to put on a jacket just to have a goddamn smoke.

Sebastián's jaw twitched as Martín took another drag from his cigarette, the end glowing livid orange for a moment before he pursed his lips and blew the smoke out in a stream aimed directly at his cousin.
