Last night around 11:30, I noticed that James's hamster, Little Bit, hadn't woken up yet. I went over and saw that she was lying in the same position she'd been in earlier in the afternoon, and my heart sank. I tapped on the top of the cage and of course, she didn't move. I called Jim over and he opened the top and rubbed her, just to make sure.
I wanted to leave her in the cage, just until James left for school this morning, but she was already not, well, smelling quite right, so Jim said we needed to go ahead and take her out. I was on egg shells all morning, hoping that James wouldn't go to her cage and see her missing. Thankfully, he never did. So this afternoon I'll have to deliver another dose of sad news to him. And while having his great-grandmother die is so much bigger of a deal than having a hamster die, I think that this will be way harder on him than that was.
This is another one of those times that I don't like being the Mommy.
