Summary: Kikyou chose to be a priestess, as InuYasha chose to fight to survive. Though, the one thing they never chose was to fall inlove.
[Note]: I always wanted to re-tell the InuYasha and Kikyou love story in some warped way. I know it's been done and there's been a filler to it but I just always wanted to write one. xD Especially with the whole InuYasha/Kikyou/Naraku love triangle and whatnot. So, this is basically what the fic's about.
To become a priestess, a woman must bind away all earthly desires. The freedoms one was born with and the physical needs.
Everything that made a woman what was a woman, had to be casted away.
To become a powerful priestess, she must shun all these desires and all temptation that comes her way.
The duty of a priestess reflected only on others, and never on herself.
Even knowing all of this, Kikyou chose to become a priestess. She wasn't born this way, she choose to become it. Her will to become an angelic servant to others was from her own will. Nobody forced her, and she didn't like the idea of people believing such a lie.
Ever since she was a girl, around her own little sister Kaede's age, Kikyou always had a desire to help the needy. The sick, the elderly, the ones who lost their homes and family due to bandits or demon attacks ; They all needed care, and she believed was the one who could help them.
Ironically enough, Kikyou was blessed with spiritual powers ever since the day of her birth. Nobody could explain why she was born with such a gift, but her parents found it a blessing. They believed that Buddha had shined down on their daughter, and gave her the gifts she has for a reason. She wanted to serve the people and protect the innocent. That was what Kikyou had in mind when she became older and began training to become a priestess.
At the beginning, she found herself having no second thoughts about her chosen path in life. If she could give herself body and soul, to serve those who needed the most care how could she neglect it? To neglect such a duty, would be to neglect Buddha himself.
When she was old enough to understand, Kikyou began to think about love and all things around it. Even still, considering all the things she was leaving behind, she had no second thoughts. There were no doubts, considering the love life she was throwing away. Deep in her heart she knew, that she would never fall in-love or desire a man, ever.
No regrets and nothing made her regret her decision.
"My destiny is one of a priestess, and nothing more." Whenever she saw the village girls powder themselves and rouge their lips, that was what she would say to herself over and over in her head. That rouge was not for her lips and that powder was not for her cheeks. She didn't need those things, the only thing she needed was a bow and arrow. These cosmetics would not help her battle demons, or heal the sick.
Her younger sister Kaede often pondered why she had no regrets living the life she did. It was through her sister's strength and will that Kaede decided to become a priestess as well.
"Kaede, if you become a priestess you know what you must abandon, right?"
"Elder sister, I know what I must abandon to become a priestess."
How could she, though? Kaede was still so young and she had no idea what she was abandoning...
"You do not know the whole truth, Kaede. You're still so young, so free and hopeful. Do not give up your freedoms."
That's what she told her, and now she found herself doubting her own path. Had she not accepted it before? Of course she had, but she only wanted to save her sister. When one loves someone whole-heartedly, they'd do anything they could to help them, no?
"But elder sister, I want to become a priestess! I want to help the people you help, tend to the people you tend, I want to become just like you."
Kikyou loved her younger sister and she didn't want Kaede to live the life she did. Even though it was by her choice...
"Kaede..."
She knew now there was nothing she could do to stop her sister from going down the same path as her, all Kikyou could do now was to give her support and help in her training.
Sighing, she gave in. "Alright Kaede, I see there's no way to persuade you otherwise." Giving her younger sister a soft smile, that was the day she decided to train her sister to become a priestess.
It was her sister's choice, as it was her own choice to become a priestess.
So then why did it feel wrong?
Why does it feel any different now?
Was it because of Kaede? And how lively and hopeful she seemed?
Was it because once Kaede became a priestess and the older she became, the more she'll realize how much freedom she actually had?
Glancing down at her sister, she realized the ultimate truth. Kikyou had chosen her choice, her own path in life. She could have no regrets, because it was her choice. Though thinking about it now, had she really accepted it as much as she believed?
"It cannot be helped," she spoke to herself softly. "Becoming a priestess, that is my destiny."
He never chose to be a half-demon, which was the only thing he had never chosen to be. He chose to be a fighter, to fight amongst other demons for survival. He wasn't the type to run away, even if the odds were against him. Though he would never admit it to himself, InuYasha was the type of being to hope. It was from hope that gave birth to his confidence.
The confidence to beat all odds that came his way, and strive for his survival.
His mother died when he was young so the only person who could take care of himself was him. Many demons chased after him and bullied him when he was young. Many others hunted him down as prey for their own notions. It was through this experience that InuYasha decided to never let others push him down. He was going to become stronger and maybe even one day stronger than his father. He never knew the old man, but he knew his father was strong.
"If I could become strong like father, then maybe one day I can surpass him..."
To live on and fight, was his choice. He could never see it any other way. If he didn't live on and fight, then he would be dead right? He didn't want to die just yet. There were too many things out in this world, and InuYasha wanted to see them all. He wanted to see everything there was to this world. He was still young, mainly in his teenage years. There was much for him to experience, and much to gain.
The only thing he couldn't choose though was to be a half-demon. If he was a full-demon, like his father and older step-brother Sesshoumaru, then he would be stronger and wouldn't have to fight as much as he had to survive.
So then, was fighting really his choice or a necessity?
He jumped into the nearby tree branches, escaping his latest enemy. “That ogre huh?”
For some reason, this ogre seemed to be in hot pursuit of him. It's not like InuYasha ever did anything wrongful towards the ogre. The only thing he really did was snatch away a human girl from his clutches. It's not like he wanted to save her or anything, but he hated hearing girls cry. When he crossed paths with the ogre, he heard the girl screaming and begging for her life. He couldn’t stand hearing her yell and scream anymore, he had to shut her up somehow.
"Well, I won't let him get me."
Before the ogre could strike a fatal blow, InuYasha leaped from the trees and slashed the enemy in half with his claws. The remaining lumps of the ogre fell towards the ground while InuYasha covered his nose with the sleeve of his red haori. "Gah, it stinks."
Next time he was going to slash a demon in half he'll make sure it's near a river.
Flicking away what little bits of blood he had left on his claws, he walked deeper into the forest. He didn't have a place to stay, or to sleep either. He was used to sleeping in the forests anyway. He wouldn't want to sleep with humans either.
They hated him. Humans and demons alike, they all hated him. Not because he was a demon, but because he was a hybrid between a human and a demon. He was neither human, nor a demon.
That's why, if he could've chosen, he would've been a full demon. That's why he wanted to become stronger, and prove himself to both humans and demons. Then nobody would say anything bad about him, they wouldn't give him nasty looks whenever he was close to a village...
He hated being called that.
He'll make sure that nobody would ever call him a half-demon ever again.
If one can't control their destiny, then what was the purpose of having a choice? Perhaps the choices people make were the foundation of their destiny. If one were to choose to die, then surely they would die. If a person chose to live, then they will try their best to live.
Kikyou chose to wander into the forest that day. For some reason, she felt compelled to take a walk. Before the sun had setted it had been a beautiful day. The sky was as clear as it could ever be, and the sun made her milky skin radiate underneath its golden rays. She never thought of herself as beautiful, or cared much about her complexion so she took no notice of these things.
Someone else did, though.
InuYasha watched her from the trees as she walked through the forest path. She will most likely find the remains of the ogre he had destroyed not too long ago. That is, if the other demons hadn't devoured its corpse already.
"A priestess...?"
The sound of footsteps ceased, as Kikyou stopped in the middle of the path. She could've sworn she felt an aura. The aura she sensed was almost demon-like, but not quite exactly demonic.
"Hmph, whoever or whatever you are..." she began, "do not come any closer or I will kill you."
InuYasha stiffened behind the tree branch. He had no reason to fight a priestess. After all she was just a human.
"So, you're just going to stay there huh?" She remarked, turning towards where she sensed the aura.
He could always run away, but he wasn't the type. What harm could a human do to him, anyway? She was only just a woman, after all. From the looks of her attire, it seemed like this priestess was a woman to be reckoned with. Not only her clothes, but from the smell the reeked off her. “She stinks of demon…”
It couldn’t be helped though, if he didn’t react now then the priestess will most likely try and attempt to fight him. Even if she could try and purify him, he didn’t want to get into another fight.
"Keh, it's not like I can do anything else."
It was true, though. It's not like InuYasha could do anything else. Tonight was the night of the full-moon, which meant that InuYasha would become weaker than he was now...
His hair would no longer be white, but black. His dog ears would turn into human ears, his claws would become normal, and his eyes would no longer be golden but brown.
Tonight was the night he would turn into a human.
He can't let the priestess see him turn into a human! If he did then she would most likely take advantage of his weakness, and destroy him right there.
He hated being so weak.
"I see..." Kikyou replied, turning back towards the path. "Do not follow me."
Her words seemed to disappear into the darkness of the forest as InuYasha watched her go. There was something about her that he couldn't describe. From what he saw of her, she was pretty. It was the first time in his life he had ever seen someone as pretty as his mother.
“Keh, whatever.”
