Describe where you grew up

I suppose that, to a lot of people, where I grew up isn’t the first place you’d think of if you were making a list of ideal places to raise a child. I grew up in the Greek Underworld, with my mother and my stepfather. As I mentioned, not the perfect place to raise a child in most people’s minds, but it was okay for me, I suppose.

The Underworld is quite dark, and…not very colourful - the stereotype of it really does fit, in some ways. The only times that I remember being introduced to a lot of colours were times when my mom took me up to see Demeter, my grandmother, but I was small then, and so I don’t remember much of those visits. The Goddess Hekate would sometimes visit my mother too, giving me small balls of magic to play with The colours were never as bright as the ones I saw on Olympus, though.

Most of my childhood was spent in the house, or in the gardens around Hades’ castle in the Underworld. I didn’t venture out of there often until I was older. I wasn’t scared of other inhabitants of my stepfather’s realm, but there was nothing out there for a child to play with. The Underworld is the home of other gods, such as Thanatos (death), Hypnos (sleep), Moros (Doom) and The Furies. A lot of Nyx’s family live in the Underworld, but they’re much older than me, and so I never really had playmates.

Besides that, the Underworld is quite dangerous, I suppose. There are hundreds of thousands of shades wandering around, and although they won’t harm you, they can be disturbing, if you aren’t used to seeing them. There are also five rivers running through the Underworld, the most notable being Styx, the river of Hate and Lethe, the river of Forgetfulness and Oblivion. I’m sure it’s quite obvious that swimming in or ingesting their water is not a good idea in any respect.

But I never really saw much of my home, the Underworld, until I was old enough to to understand the dangers of the rivers. I stayed inside the house, played with my dolls and read. Sometimes my mother took me out to play with Cerberus, but not often. I think she was afraid of hi, which I suppose is understandable, but he’s really quite playful. Especially if you scratch behind all of his ears.
