So, my aunt, who is actually not a Republican, is listening to Karl Rove on Meet the Press. She hates it when I say "That's not true," so often that she can't hear, so I leave the room. Twenty minutes later, I come back, and she says:
"Well, you should have heard the person who came on after Karl Rove. He said that part of our problem is that we won't listen to people with other opinions."
And I said, "It's not Karl Rove's opinion that I object to, it's his lying."
"But you have to respect his opinion," she said.
"He's not stating an opinion. He's saying things that are untrue in an effort to push an agenda that has nothing to do with us disagreeing about the direction of this country and everything to do with 'his side' and 'winning'."
"But you have to respect his opinion."
At this point, I stop talking because I can feel the vein in my forehead that will eventually rupture and end me start to throb.
Two days later, we're sitting at a dinner table with a bunch of people, and my aunt starts in on how I won't listen to Karl Rove's opinion, and I say "I just won't listen to him lie," and she keeps saying "But you have to respect his opinion," and finally 22-year-old cousin Molly, who never says anything, yells
IT'S NOT AN OPINION. IT'S A FACT, AND HE'S WRONG.
And the children shall lead us.
